Have you heard? Acclaimed photographer Gary Bernstein (Gary Bernstein Studio) is giving us an exclusive peek at some of his iconic photos of Elizabeth and sharing some memories of their time together—both in front of and behind the camera. Today, Gary shares how Elizabeth recreated one of her most iconic moments on screen before one of their sessions.

“In 1960, when I was 12, I accompanied my parents to see ‘Butterfield 8,’” Gary says. “My mother was seated between me and my father. When Elizabeth appears in a plunging white negligee, my mother elbowed my father so hard in the ribs that he actually winced. ‘Artie, I knew we shouldn't have brought Gary to this film!’ It was too late. I was already hooked.

“The scene continues with Elizabeth’s character finding an envelope of money her lover leaves for her. She throws it down in anger, takes out her lipstick, and scrawls ‘No Sale’ across his mirror. Some twenty years later, I was with Elizabeth; the legendary José Eber, her hairstylist; her makeup artist, the talented Francesca Talot; and a few more of our entourage in my Culver City, California studio dressing room, preparing for a shoot. Elizabeth was looking into the mirror—her face a few inches from the glass—doing her lips. She always did her own lips. The white walls of my dressing room were adorned with a hundred different celebrity autographs. José encouraged Elizabeth to sign my wall. Without looking up, she says, ‘Well, I'm not going to sign there with all those other people!’ I said, ‘Elizabeth, in ‘Butterfield 8,’ you walk over to Laurence Harvey’s mirror and you sure signed that perfectly. Why don’t you do the same thing here?’ She said, ‘I love it, Gary!’ She takes her lipstick and, across the end of my mirror, she writes, ‘No Sale!’ Unfortunately, I didn't cut out that piece of the mirror or even take a photo of it before I moved my studio, but I cherish the memory of that fun day—one of many with Elizabeth.”

In case you missed it, legendary photographer Gary Bernstein (Gary Bernstein Studio) is giving us an exclusive peek at some of his iconic photos of Elizabeth and sharing some memories of their time together—both in front of and behind the camera. Today, Gary shares the backstory behind this fantastic photograph of the two of them taken in 1987.

“Whenever possible, I set my camera on a tripod when shooting—regardless of whether I’m shooting in the studio or outside on location,” Gary explains. “The reason (for you photographers out there ;)) is not solely because it is steadier (which, of course, it is—and it is absolutely critical if you’re working in low light, for example), but rather because it allows me to concentrate better on my subject (and the subject’s expressions) while knowing that I have framed the image properly in the camera. It’s one less thing to think about!

“On this shoot, we were doing a number of sessions for various clients. That was standard operating procedure on just about every Elizabeth session. Elizabeth was sitting on an adjustable stool with a white adjustable table in front of her. I was behind the camera, looking at the legend through the lens and directing my assistants where to move the lights, the reflectors, the background; while they take light meter readings, etc., etc., when Elizabeth says, like a little girl, ‘Gary… come take a picture with me.’ Well, when a beautiful woman wants to take a picture with you, you accommodate her—especially if the woman happens to be Elizabeth Taylor ;). I put a long cable release on the camera, and moved in next to ET. Click.

“I really don’t make a habit of taking photographs with my clients. I’m glad I did this one, which ended up being used as a feature image in an article about my photography in the classic UK magazine ‘Woman’s Own.’”
