I recently had the chance to try out the professional line of photo books from Saal Digital. It’s a little counterproductive to look at tiny images of an 8”x12” book on your phone, but here’s a quick review: Upon receiving the book, my initial impression is that it is pretty fancy pants. While I would normally skip all the bells and whistles, I tried out the acrylic cover, which has an unusual, but attractive feel for the right kind of image. The matte paper is thick, and the print quality is good. Both black and white and color images show a good dynamic range. A real bonus is the layflat binding, which removes the image swallowing gutter - especially nice on a 16”x12” two page spread. Printing and delivery took less than a week, even though the shipment came from Germany. The books are not exactly discount priced, but the cost is reasonable when compared with other book printing services I have tried.

We are so used to seeing all our images for only a brief moment on our phones, so it’s almost magical seeing them in a tangible large format once in a while.
