Merry Christmas!

What a year it has been. This Christmas is unlike most Christmases in many of our lifetimes. But I think as we get older the meaning of Christmas changes. As kids, it’s all about the excitement of gift giving, wondering what you get, a little later it’s about what we can give to show our appreciation and love for others. But for me, I think this Christmas is about growth. It’s about being grateful and thankful for the little things.

And in that, many of you that have supported the work that and I have done has truly been a blessing. In many ways, you are our family. And we love you, we are grateful for you and we thank you!

I Can’t Breathe has been a highlight to our year, a work that we are beyond proud of! And without you all having our backs and believing in us, it would not have been (and continues) to be as successful as it has. Merry Christmas! We love you!

So what does it mean to be a black business owner?

Aklia:

“...when you talk about what does it mean to be a Black business owner, you really have to start with what does it mean to be Black here in America, I could get you to run out of battery, if I started talking about that. We have a beautiful, glorious culture that a lot of us are completely divorced from, separated from our roots and our true culture by design. So we have to kind of seek that out, I think a lot of us create our own rituals and tap into our ancestral, connections to the bigger worldview that exist that is often glossed over and that we miss. So that's what we do here. It's really a multifaceted expression of ethnic culture. And in my decor and in our product, and in our art and in every facet of our business really is an expression of that. That's why people can come here and feel very, at home, they feel safe, they feel inspired.”

So what does it mean to be Black business owners?

Christina:

"I know for sure, at Aklias and REHAB, we definitely are the example of what Black culture is....One thing that Aklia and I have really tried to do in the beauty and salon industry, is try to have an environment where you can be yourself and not be ashamed of all the stereotypes that black people should be ashamed of, or that your hair is to the ’n word’ [nappy]. You know, that's our N word. Don't use that word here. You know what I mean? The nappy? We don't use that. Although there’s nothing wrong with that word. But that's not our mindset. Black is beautiful. Curl is beautiful. However you want to wear your hair, there’s no judgment behind it. You can wear your hair any type of way. You shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable for who you are. And that's why this is a safe space."
