MY BROTHER TOLD ME NOT TO OPEN OUR MOTHER'S BEDROOM DOOR
The day after my mother died, my brother gave me one strange warning.
He told me not to open the bedroom door.
At first, I thought he was talking about her belongings.
Our mother had spent the last few months of her life in that room.
I assumed he simply wasn't ready to go through her things.
But then he looked directly at me and said,
“Whatever you do, don't look inside the old wardrobe.”
I asked him why.
He refused to explain.
That made me even more curious.
Our mother had always been a private person, but she had never kept secrets from us.
At least, that's what I believed.
My brother and I spent the entire day sorting through her house.
We found old photographs.
Christmas decorations.
Letters from our father.
School reports from when we were children.
Everything felt normal.
Until I entered my mother's bedroom.
The wardrobe was standing against the far wall.
It was old and made of dark wood.
I had seen it my entire childhood.
I opened the first drawer.
Nothing unusual.
The second drawer contained clothes.
The third was empty.
Then I noticed something strange.
There was a small key taped underneath the drawer.
I remembered my brother's warning.
I should have left it alone.
Instead, I took the key.
Behind the wardrobe was a tiny locked compartment I had never noticed before.
The key fit perfectly.
Inside was a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
There were only three sentences.
The first said:
“Your brother doesn't know the whole truth.”
The second said:
“I promised your father I would never tell you.”
And the third sentence made my hands shake.
“Before you trust anyone with what you find, check the photograph behind the clock.”
I immediately looked at the old clock on the wall.
There was a photograph hidden behind it.
And when I pulled it out, I realized why my brother had been so desperate to keep me away from that room.
The photograph showed our mother.
Our father.
And a little girl I had never seen before.
The little girl looked exactly like my brother.
And she was standing in front of a house I recognized.
Our childhood home.
I called my brother.
He answered immediately.
I asked him one question.
“Who is the girl in this photograph?”
There was silence on the phone.
Then my brother whispered:
“You weren't supposed to find that.”
PART 2 is where I discovered who she really was.
