Took these on my first day in Ljubljana. Coming from Barcelona, I wasn’t prepared for the cold, nor for the fuzzy amber light bleeding from windows onto frozen cobblestones, melting each street corner, almost tactile. I was freezing! At one point my fingers became so stiff I almost dropped my camera. I kept shooting until I really couldn’t take it anymore. Escaped into the nearest cafe, ordered tea and raw lemon cake, thawed my hands around the cup and I finally breathed.
I came up with this theory: in coldness like that, you stop drifting. Every step requires attention or you slip. The cold forces presence, and warmth becomes a bless rather than a condition taken for granted. Warmth tastes better when it’s icy outside. I notice it more. Simply being warm made me happy during those couple days.
Or maybe my brain froze so I couldn’t think about anything else. Either way, that cake was so good..
