A photo of my favorite New Mexico waterfall from last May. I'm really itching to get back here once the snow melts (hopefully we get more). This is an extremely strenuous hike but photos really don't do this waterfall justice, it's gorgeous in person! At 100 feet in height, it's pretty tall too!

Before and after of a 60-ft waterfall in the Santa Fe National Forest. These photos were taken about two weeks apart! It's amazing how quickly ice forms once it drops below zero at night. In photo #1, it was about 35 degrees at the waterfall. In photo #2, it was about 3 below zero.

These may be my last photos of 2021, unless something interesting happens in the next few days. This year my photography was focused mostly on waterfalls and the Pecos Wilderness in particular. I hauled my camera on some very long hikes, including many hikes in the middle of the night to catch the sunrise. I really need to go back and look through some photos because I haven't shared them all yet!

100-ft tall icy waterfall in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

It has been extremely dry in the Southwest lately but one benefit to that is the mountains are still accessible. This big, stunning waterfall is a long, arduous bushwhack through the forest, but it's worth the effort. There is nothing quite like spending an hour sitting at this falls and soaking in the beauty and solitude.

Pecos Baldy and East Pecos Baldy, covered in the first snow of the season. This view is from near the town of Truchas and it was quite a breathtaking drive back after hiking all morning in up to 18 inches of snow!

Lower Trampas Lake with a perfect reflection of snowy cliffs and trees. I was very tired by the time I took this photo, as I had already hiked for hours up and along the ridge above the lake, but this scene was so beautiful that it made me forget the pain of my sore feet and aching legs!

Golden aspens in the Santa Fe National Forest, covered in the first snow of the season (September 30). There were quite a few branches falling down from the weight of the fresh snow and ice!

Sheepshead Peak and Medio Truchas Peak in the morning light.

I didn't make it up here until about 20 minutes after the beautiful sunrise because it took me so long to get up this steep slope in deep snow! But by the time I had this view the sun was behind a thin cloud and the light was still very nice.

Cliffs below the Truchas Peaks reflected in the still waters of Lower Trampas Lake, just as its edges begin to freeze!

I got a few nice photos of these lakes, and I think these were the prettiest reflections I've ever seen. The water was so perfectly still, it looked like I was peering into another world.

Last weekend was one of the best photography weekends I've had in years. I got many amazing photos!

Let's start with this one - Jicarita Peak in the Pecos Wilderness. To witness this breathtaking view required an immense amount of effort. I started my hike at 3:30 am, and unfortunately it took me far longer than I thought to get to the top. Even with crampons on, and coming out of a summer full of 20+ mile day hikes, the ascent up the steep mountainside in 18 inches of snow really humbled me. Sliding back down was fun, though!

I'll share the rest of my snow photos over the next couple weeks!

A cascading stream in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This was a summer of lush greenery and waterfalls. The water level in late July was almost at snowmelt levels and this area had received over 10 inches of rain in the past week. I was soaked from the chest down after this hike because all of the trees and vegetation around me were dripping with water.

With the first major snowstorm of the season predicted tomorrow night for the high mountains, it's time to say goodbye to summer!
