"They Walk Among Us"

Native American Rock Art never ceases to intrigue me.

This grouping of figures at Utah's Sego Canyon is a perfect example. They just don't fit my preconceptions of prehistoric artwork...which makes me love them all the more.

Beautiful to my eye. Plus, they keep those 'ancient alien' conspiracy buffs in business.

Cheers!

"All Good Things..."

This view of Mt. Hood from the southern shore of Lake Trillium is one of the Pacific Northwest's iconic images.

But no matter how many times I shot there over the years, it consistently failed to deliver a sunrise worthy of the setting.

Well, that was true until May 29th of 2025, when this epic dawn more than compensated me for those decades of disappointment.

And to top it off, Mother Nature also provided a small lenticular cloud 'cap' on Mt. Hood's summit, just to show me what the ol' gal could do when she really set her mind to it.

Cheers!

"White Wizard"
Antarctica's shoreline can be as dramatic as any in the world. And when you are blessed with incredible lighting, the results can be epic.

We recently had a baby manatee born in the Wekiva River (Florida) behind our home. They hung around for a few days and were quickly named "Potato & Chip" by the neighborhood's kids.

I've written a blog about this experience with lots more photos, check it out at: www.firefallphotography.com/witnessing-a-baby-manatees-am...

I've photographed Manatees for 25 years, never seen a birth before...truly a once in a lifetime experience.

We recently had a baby manatee born in the river by the park in our neighborhood. They were quickly named "Potato & Chip." Plus, Mom and Baby stuck around for a few days, giving me the chance to get lots of photos and video.

I'll write up a blog with photos soon, but in the meantime, attached is a 2-minute video with some of the highlights. In the first clip, you can actually see the placenta (looks like a white trash bag).

I've photographed Manatees for 25 years, never seen a birth before...truly a once in a lifetime experience.

PS: If you wonder why Chip is constantly trying to snuggle under mom's front flippers, well, that's where manatee ni***es are!

"Imperfect Perfection"
As a photographer, muted colors, soft focus, and weak contrast are things I usually consider to be flaws. But when standing atop a ridge gazing down at the fog rolling over this quaint Vermont farm, I have to admit that there are exceptions to every rule.

"Foolin' Around"
The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is a photographer's playground. Yes, I specialize in landscapes, but sometimes it is fun to cut loose and do something completely different. Well, the Balloon Fiesta is certainly that.

During the early morning "Dawn Patrol" event back in 2022, I came upon this colorful scene. Now, if I were shooting landscapes, I would have done hours of research, set up my tripod, and methodically adjusted my settings. But in this case, I was just walking around with my camera, shooting handheld shots at 1/125th of a second with my ISO set to Auto. The result was this shot at ISO 8000, which I would have considered a travesty in my landscape work, but since I was shooting for fun, I just went for it. Thankfully, modern cameras and Topaz DeNoise can work wonders...even in situations like this.

To make it even better, this shot ended up winning 2nd place in one of the Fiesta's Photo Contests. Sometimes, a trip down an unfamiliar path has benefits!

"Second Chances"

I had hiked to this spot at ‘o-dark thirty’ with my heart set on capturing the Milky Way rising majestically behind Oregon's Heceta Head Lighthouse.

I found the perfect spot, carefully set up, got everything painstakingly dialed in, reached for the shutter button...and a nasty little squall rolled in and covered up every last silly star.

I took a deep breath, let out a tortured sigh, and put away all my gear.

As I slowly sulked back down the trail, a beam of light briefly blinded me, and I glanced over my shoulder at the lighthouse in annoyance. But when I did, I was struck by the sight of these light shafts lazily rotating out to the horizon.

If I hadn't been in such a grumpy mood, it wouldn't have taken as long as it did to recognize that the scene that lay before me was better than the one I had pre-envisioned.

As that realization hit, my frown slid away, followed by my backpack and I cheerfully got to work.

This image was the result. Thanks to the Gods for trashing my plans with that storm.

Cheers!
Jeff

"Perdition's Flame"
Lava Tubes are, by my definition, pretty darn cool. The thought that molten lava poured out of a volcano and the exposed surface cooled to solid rock shell covering an empty tube so big you can walk through it just wild. Be that as it may, I've never found them to be photogenic.

Until now.

"When Life Gives you Lemons..."

By the time the pandemic started to wane back in early 2022, I was desperate to end my self-imposed quarantine. I booked a spot on a small group tour to Iceland and enjoyed a great week indulging my long-delayed photography habit.

At the end of the tour, just before boarding the shuttle to the airport, we got the results from the airline-mandatory COVID-19 test. Every last one of us tested positive. It turned out that the tour leader's 'little sniffle' had actually been full-blown COVID, and he had shared more than just his photographic knowledge with us. The authorities told us we would all have to remain in Iceland until we tested negative.

Our tour operator shuffled his feet, mumbled something like: "Sorry about that…hope you had a good time," and quickly drove away.

The hotel was fully booked, and we were left to get our stuff, check out, and scramble to find a place to stay in Reykjavik.

Which was no fun. Finding a new hotel was a pain (and expensive). To say that I was less than happy might be an understatement.

But now, a few years later, that frustration has faded away. What I remember now are the bonds the tour's 'survivors' forged after we were abandoned. Those friendships remain strong to this day.

And…I remember the photos. I ended up staying an extra week in Reykjavik. Rather than sit moping in my room, I spent the time out photographing the town. Which resulted in a wealth of images that I wouldn't have if the tour had ended as planned.

This shot is an example. The ‘Sun Voyager’ (Solfar) sculpture is my favorite spot in Reykjavik. I love it: the angles, the curves, the size…it just works for me. But as cool as it might be, the weather is rarely ideal for photography. But since I visited it multiple times over the next week, I happened to be there this particular evening as a clearing storm broke, revealing this magical vista.

As the old saying goes, "When life gives you lemons…"

Cheers!
