Walking through the Denver Botanic Gardens in September, I came across this cluster of pure white phlox.

The individual flowers were about an inch across, bigger than the phlox I'm used to seeing. There wasn't a label nearby, but the size and the September bloom point toward tall garden phlox rather than the low creeping kind that flowers in spring.

I shot it with the 105mm Micro, and in the edit I brought the background exposure down so the white petals would stand out.

Another Saturday at the Longmont Farmers Market, held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds.

At one grower's table full of mushrooms, the golden oysters caught my eye right away. Part of it was the color, a deep saturated yellow, and part of it was the way the same rounded cap shape repeats across the whole crate. A crate of gray oysters sat right beside them.

The market is run by Boulder County Farmers Markets, a nonprofit that keeps it producer-only, so what's on the tables comes from local growers and producers.

Beth and I kept working our way through the Knights of Columbus car show at the Boulder County Fairgrounds back in September and came across this gold 1958 Edsel Citation.

Ford launched Edsel as a new mid-priced brand to take on GM and Chrysler, and the Citation sat at the top of the lineup. It was built for the 1958 model year only, and the brand itself didn't last much longer.

What it left behind was some memorable styling, and the vertical horse-collar grille is the piece it's best remembered for. I got in close and square to it so the gold EDSEL lettering runs straight down the middle.

Back in March 2024, Beth and I headed out to Utah during the new moon for a camping trip, some astrophotography, and off-roading in our new Jeep.

I'd heard about this overlook in a dispersed camping group, and it lived up to the hype. Moonscape Overlook, also called Skyline Rim or Skyline View, sits on BLM land on the edge of Factory Bench west of Hanksville. The gray badlands below are Mancos Shale, laid down when an inland sea covered much of Utah.

We caught it at sunrise. Beth walked out onto the pinnacle and Sophie kept a close eye on her from the rim.

It's not a big spot, though… if it gets much more popular, it'll be hard pressed to handle the crowds.

One last lantana from the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Most of the clusters I came across had plenty of orange mixed in, but this one was almost all red, with a single yellow floret sitting right in the middle. That's what made it worth stopping for… it reads almost like a graphic.

I shot it with the 105mm Micro and opened up two stops so the leaves behind went soft, letting the head stand on its own.

Lantana florets open yellow and turn orange and red after they've been pollinated, so that one yellow spot is most likely still waiting on a visit.

The lily ponds at the Denver Botanic Gardens were still enough to work as a mirror, holding the clouds overhead.

I've photographed these pads and blooms up close before, so this time I stepped back and shot straight down. That turned the sky into the background… the pads and the single yellow water lily look like they're floating on clouds instead of a pond.

I used the 105mm Micro at f/14 to keep the pads sharp across the surface, and held the exposure back so the water without reflection stayed black. That dark water is what gives the cloud band its edge.

Even in September, the Denver Botanic Gardens had plenty worth photographing, and this cluster of pink flowers was one of them.

Each open bloom is four narrow petals spread into a cross at the end of a long, thin tube. Most of the cluster hadn't opened yet… the buds outnumber the flowers about three to one.

The light was fading in this part of the gardens, so I shot it with the 105mm Micro at f/8 and let the ISO climb. I wanted the buds sharp along with the open flowers, and that was worth a little noise.

I'm still not sure what this one is. If you recognize it, I'd like to hear.

Another one from the Boulder County Fairgrounds, on the way to the car show.

At the south end of the exhibit hall, a flagpole stands next to a sculpture by Boulder artist James Kindgren… a tiger swallowtail butterfly perched on a bronze railroad spike. It was commissioned for Boulder County's 150th anniversary and installed in 2012, with the spike standing in for the county's railroad history and the butterfly for its natural history. The spike is wrapped in relief carvings of a sun, figures, hands and animals.

It came out of a county sculpture competition where it went up against a hawk design, and it was first proposed for the courthouse plaza in Boulder before landing here.

I wanted the flag and the sculpture together, which meant lying on the ground to find an angle that worked. Even then, I barely got both in.

Another look at the Imperial, head-on this time. This was the Knight Riders car show at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, put on by the Knights of Columbus, which Beth and I wandered after the farmers market.

If you saw the Buick I posted Monday, compare the fronts. That 1948 Buick has one headlight per side. This 1959 Imperial has four, two per side in chrome pods. That isn't a styling whim... a single seven-inch sealed beam per side was the only legal arrangement in the United States for seventeen years, and four-lamp systems only became legal with a rule change in 1957. Two cars parked at the same show, eleven years and one regulation apart, and you can read it off the front of them.

The story is still the best part. The owner bought this car used in 1967 for $350, drove it, parked it for a long stretch, and put it through a frame-off restoration that finished in 2008. He's had it the whole time.

Another cluster from the walk around the Denver Botanic Gardens.

I don't know what these are. If you do, tell me.

The four flowers sit on slightly different planes, so f/8 to keep them all sharp. It was deep shade under there, which meant ISO 6400 for a usable shutter speed. Then the background came down further in the edit until there was nothing left but the pink.
