Upper Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona. Looked up into this arching opening where the rock curves over itself like a wave frozen mid-break. Cool blue-gray tones in the lower rock, warm orange and red in the walls above, all of it carved smooth by flash floods and wind over a very long time. The canyon sits within the Navajo Nation and is visited with Navajo guides. Every turn in here gives you a different shape to look at.

A pair of cactus blooms near Page, Arizona, catching warm side light. The magenta against the gold of the dry grass behind them…the desert doesn’t hold back on color when it decides to bloom. Two flowers from the same pad, opening at the same time, surrounded by spines. There’s a toughness to where these things grow that makes the softness of the petals stand out even more.

Valley of the Gods, Utah. Lined up the arc of the Milky Way core so it rose right out of that low butte on the horizon. The butte gives the whole sweep of the sky something to anchor to…without a bit of land in the frame, all those stars don’t have anywhere to land. The dark skies out here let the core come through with real detail.

Upper Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona. The walls curve and fold overhead, worked smooth by water and time into shapes that read more like fabric than stone. Standing down in the slot, following the curves and the texture upward toward that small opening of light far above, it’s hard not to slow down and just look. The canyon sits within the Navajo Nation and is visited with Navajo guides. A place that rewards quiet attention.

Lake Powell, near Page, Arizona. The blue water cuts right through the red rock and keeps going, bend after bend, out toward the distant buttes on the horizon. Beth and I were exploring the Page area, and this view gives you a feel for how much is out there beyond what you can reach on foot. The contrast of that deep blue against the warm sandstone is the kind of thing the desert does that still surprises me.

A cactus bloom catching the last evening light near Page, Arizona, with a butte sitting soft in the background. Wanted the flower and the formation to work together…the bloom sharp and glowing up front, the butte settling into shape behind it. The shallow depth of field keeps your eye on the flower while still giving you a sense of where you are. Two desert subjects sharing one frame, lit by the same evening sun.

Star trails over Valley of the Gods, Utah. One long exposure with the camera pointed at Polaris and let the Earth’s rotation draw the circles. The buttes sit at the bottom of the frame like they’re holding the whole sky in place…everything above them is motion. The dark skies out here make this kind of shot possible without fighting light pollution. You set the timing, walk away, and come back to find out what the sky did while you weren’t watching.

Monument Valley. Looked straight up at the base of this formation and waited for the sun to slip behind the edge. Stopped down the aperture to get the starburst and let the scale of the rock take over the frame. The vertical streaks and staining on the face tell you how water has been running down this wall for a long time. From down here, the desert floor disappears and it’s just you, the stone, and the sky.

Cactus bloom at a campground near Page, Arizona. Went looking for backlight on this flower and the sun came through the petals just right…the pink went translucent and the spines lit up gold around the edges. A closed bud sitting next to it, waiting its turn. Sometimes the harshest landscape produces the most delicate subjects. You just have to get close enough to notice.

Monument Valley. Found this twisted dead tree and used it to frame the formations behind it. The bleached wood against the red sand and blue sky…and the West Mitten sitting right in the gap between the branches. The tree has as much character as the buttes behind it. It just doesn’t get the postcard treatment. The branches spread out across the frame like they’re reaching for something, and the shadows they throw on the sand add another layer. Sometimes the foreground subject and the background subject are equally interesting…you just have to frame them so they share the stage.
