A night I will always remember

I sat by my car waiting for the northern lights to show north of Grand Marais, MN. I arrived around 7pm, and waited patiently. As I went back and forth outside to keep warm I noticed this tree stretching over a lake, but it was far away from the road. I grabbed a shovel out of the trunk, and started digging a 40-50ft long path through over 4ft of snow to get to this tree. It took quite a while, but I made the path just wide enough to walk through. At 11pm the sky went crazy, and the aurora danced until sunrise. I stayed at this spot, then drove to Grand Portage and took photos until sunrise.

Canal Park with Sea Smoke

This lighthouse has always stood out to me when visiting Duluth. It looks like a simple scene, but this lighthouse has been through a lot since it was constructed. A few years ago it was getting smashed by 20ft waves, and in this scene it's -40F surrounded by sea smoke from Lake Superior.

Happy Valentine's Day! A few years ago I found a spot along the ocean that had a heart shape if you looked at the right angle. The long exposure blurred the water as it crashed into the hole and gave a deep blue color in the shadow.

This was the result of my first time photographing a Lunar Eclipse! The moon is stacked in this image as the moon sets and as the eclipse takes place. I chose to have the windmill in the scene as a subject since I could plan it out in advance with an app that would show where the moon would be. This photo went on to be published in a book.

Frozen Ship

This was one of the coldest conditions I had ever taken a photo in. The wind chill was -44, and my camera battery would go from full to 0% in less than 15 minutes. This ship was coming into Two Harbors, MN and was surrounded by sea smoke/fog.

At one time I had a telescope to do deep space photography. Here's a photo of the Orion Nebula. It was -10F outside but it was a clear, crisp night for photos! Over 100 photos were taken and stacked into a single image to capture the colors.
