This abandoned airplane has one of the stranger stories you'll find in the Nevada desert.

It sits outside the former Angel's Ladies Brothel, where the aircraft became part of a publicity stunt decades ago. The story involved a challenge offering a prize to anyone who could parachute from an airplane and land on a mattress at the property.

The brothel eventually closed, but the airplane stayed behind.

Today, decades of desert weather and graffiti have transformed it into one of the most unusual remnants of the property—and something you'd probably never expect to find sitting outside an abandoned brothel.

Exploring abandoned World War II bunkers along the coast of Italy.

During WWII, defensive positions like these were constructed along the Italian coastline to protect strategic areas from Allied attacks. Thick reinforced-concrete walls sheltered soldiers, am******on, and weapons, while openings facing the sea provided views of approaching ships and aircraft.

After the war ended in 1945, coastal fortifications like these quickly became obsolete and many were simply abandoned.

More than 80 years later, the bunkers are still here—weathered by salt air and slowly becoming part of the coastline they were once built to defend.

Once a tropical getaway, this abandoned resort has been sitting along Fiji’s coastline for decades.

The Korolevu Beach Resort was part of Fiji’s early tourism industry, welcoming visitors long before the country became the major South Pacific destination it is today. The property expanded over the years, offering guests beachfront accommodations surrounded by palms and tropical gardens.

Its story changed in the 1980s, when severe cyclone damage combined with ownership and legal problems ultimately brought the resort’s operation to an end.

Instead of returning to its former life, the property was left behind.

Decades later, empty rooms and crumbling buildings remain among the tropical vegetation, just steps from the same coastline that once attracted vacationers here.

Sitting among the military relics of Cambodia’s past is this abandoned Soviet-built helicopter.

During decades of conflict in Cambodia, Soviet-designed military equipment became part of the country’s armed forces, including helicopters used for transportation and military operations.

Today, this helicopter is preserved at the War Museum Cambodia in Siem Reap alongside tanks, artillery, aircraft, weapons, and other artifacts connected to the country’s turbulent 20th-century history.

The engines are silent and the metal is slowly deteriorating, but equipment like this provides a tangible look at a period of Cambodian history that lasted for generations.

Imagine leaving your hometown after an earthquake and never being able to move back.

Poggioreale, Sicily had been home to generations of families since the 1600s. Then, in January 1968, a devastating series of earthquakes struck western Sicily, badly damaging the town and surrounding communities.

Rather than rebuild the historic town, residents were relocated to a new Poggioreale constructed nearby. The original homes, churches, streets, and public buildings were left behind.

What makes this place so fascinating is that it wasn't gradually abandoned because the jobs disappeared. A natural disaster brought centuries of life here to an abrupt end.

More than 50 years later, the ruins of the old town are still standing.

This abandoned campus once operated as a military academy overlooking a Southern California lake.

The school opened in 1933, combining academics with military-style discipline, uniforms, drills, and physical training. Young cadets lived and studied on the campus, which included classrooms, dormitories, athletic facilities, and other buildings designed to support life at a boarding school.

The academy operated for decades before closing in 1977. Since then, much of the property has sat abandoned, leaving behind the remains of a very different era of education.

Walking through these buildings today, it's strange to imagine them once filled with uniformed cadets marching between classes.

Imagine calling a room like this home for years.

Large psychiatric institutions often relied on dormitory-style wards where many patients slept in shared spaces. As populations increased during the 20th century, some facilities became severely overcrowded, placing enormous pressure on staff and living conditions.

As treatment shifted away from long-term institutionalization, these sprawling hospitals gradually emptied and many eventually closed.

Today, the beds are gone and the dormitory sits abandoned—but the size of these rooms gives you a glimpse into how many people once lived their lives inside institutions like this.

Another familiar Nevada casino has gone quiet.

Buffalo Bill’s opened in Primm in 1994 and became a landmark for millions of people driving between Southern California and Las Vegas. The Old West-themed resort eventually grew to more than 1,200 hotel rooms and was impossible to miss from I-15.

And then there was Desperado.

When the roller coaster opened in 1994, its 225-foot drop and 80 mph top speed made it one of the most extreme coasters in the world. It eventually stopped operating, while the resort itself struggled through years of declining business.

Buffalo Bill’s ended regular operations in July 2025, another major loss for a town that was once a destination of its own. As of 2026, the casino remains closed while new operators have taken over the Primm gaming properties.

If you grew up making the drive to Vegas, there’s a good chance you remember this place.

Imagine vacationing here when this was still a beachfront resort.

For years, guests came for the ocean views, tropical weather, and a room just steps from the beach. Then a powerful hurricane tore through the area, severely damaging the property and bringing its life as a resort to an end.

Instead of being rebuilt, the damaged buildings were left behind. Salt air, storms, and years of exposure have continued the destruction ever since.

Today, empty rooms and crumbling structures sit beside a beach that looks almost unchanged—a strange reminder of how quickly a thriving resort can disappear.
