Beautiful Saint Charles Road in Lombard.

“Kids, get in the car… I just need one quick photo.”

And there I was again, standing still in the silence of the night, no traffic, no noise, just the glow of the street lights reflecting on the empty road. Moments like this make the whole world feel paused for just a second.

The neon lights glowed against the cold night sky as they pulled into Gene & Jude's. The parking lot shimmered from the rain that had just passed, every crack in the pavement reflecting yellow and red like an old movie scene.

She smiled as she looked over at him.
“Honey, I’m hungry. Get our food… I’ll be right back.”

Before he could ask where she was going, she slipped out of the car and disappeared into the night with a grin that always meant trouble or adventure. Probably both.

He laughed quietly to himself and walked toward the glowing windows. Inside, the smell of fresh fries and grilled hot dogs wrapped around him like pure Chicago comfort.

While he waited, he glanced out the window toward the parking lot.

He shook his head and laughed.
“There she is…”

She spotted him holding the food bag high in the air and ran back toward him.

“What were you doing?” he asked.

“Making a memory.”

And standing there in the glow of the city lights, eating hot dogs out of a paper bag in the middle of an ordinary night, he realized she was right. Some of the best moments in life are never planned — they just happen between “I’m hungry” and “I’ll be right back.”
