I've been behind a camera for 15 years.

Looking back, one of the biggest mistakes I made wasn't my editing style, my equipment, or even my marketing.

It was undercutting myself.

For nearly 10 years, I charged less than I was worth because I thought lower prices would bring more clients. I thought if I could just be the cheapest option, people would book.

What I learned was that low prices don't automatically create a sustainable business.

A photography business isn't just the hour spent taking photos.

It's the years spent learning the craft.
The money invested in equipment.
The insurance.
The software.
The website.
The marketing.
The travel.
The education.
The editing.
The networking.
The contracts.
The client communication.

It's the countless hours nobody sees.

The camera is only one tool in a much larger business.

What finally changed things for me was understanding that clients aren't just paying for photos. They're paying for experience, consistency, reliability, customer service, problem-solving, and the confidence that comes from working with someone who has spent years learning their craft.

If you're a photographer who is constantly lowering your prices to compete, let me save you some time.

The cheapest photographer usually isn't the one building a long-term business.

Know your value.

Charge appropriately.

Invest in yourself.

And remember, every time you undercut yourself, you're teaching your clients to undervalue your work too.

After 15 years in this industry, that's a lesson I wish I had learned much sooner.

Some evenings feel less like a location scout and more like a reminder to slow down and just exist for a minute.

Yesterday at Burr Oak Lake, the rain came and went all day, but right before sunset the storm clouds rolled across the sky in the most unreal way. The kind of sky that makes everything go quiet for a second.

No crowded timeline.
No stress.
No rushing.

Just the sound of the wind, the lake, and a reminder that beauty still exists in the middle of heavy days.

I wasn’t out looking for wildlife… but sometimes the moment finds you.

Out in the Columbus suburbs, I stumbled across a scene I don’t usually photograph.

A mother raccoon with her babies.

Three total… though only two are visible here. One had gotten stuck in a storm drain.

I watched as everything slowed down for a second. She realized help was there. She stayed close with the others while carefully working to get the one trapped free.

It was one of those moments you don’t plan… you just witness.

And I’m glad I stopped long enough to see it.

Two years ago today, I took one of the most meaningful trips of my life.

It started with buses to Maryland. Meeting up with my dad. Then meeting my mom at the hotel before we flew out of BWI to Seattle.

From there, I met my cousins again for the first time in years… the last time I saw them, they were little kids and I was in my early twenties.

We boarded a small plane to Pullman, then drove the rest of the way into Idaho.

The next day, I reunited with my uncle after years apart. We met childhood friends of my mom and uncle, and I got to see my Mormor.

We hiked Moscow Mountain together.

And in the middle of all that travel, all those connections, all that distance collapsing into one moment…

I was reminded how important it is to show up for the people you love, even when life takes you far away from them.

I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

And I look forward to more adventures like that… the kind that bring people back together.

Take a moment today… and slow down.

Not everything meaningful is loud or obvious.
Sometimes it’s the smallest details that matter the most.
The quiet moments.
The little things you almost miss when life moves too fast.

Quick update… we won’t be doing our wedding live event today. Mama Rae has been dealing with allergies and a very sore, raspy throat and needs a little time to rest and reset.
