✨ Let's talk about everything that went right to make this session perfect. ✨
1- 💃🏼 Styling: Megan and I worked together to styler her family. She likes to book during different seasons every year, and this year she booked during summer. We had decided to use the car, which is maroon. We wanted to compliment the maroon without the session becoming too "fall." Megan wore a dress I chose for her from MEIJER of all places. Ava wore a dress from my client closet, and we dressed the boys in subtle blue and shorts to keep the "summer" element.
2- 🎬 Creative Direction: Because I have been photographing this family for years, I wanted to switch things up a little. I knew they had a classic car, and asked if they would be willing to bring it to the session. Megan was excited but wanted to make sure they got a few of the classic/Christmas card photos without the car. Together we designed a session that was both creative and fulfilled Megan's wants.
3. 🍂 Location: I had to find a location that had the lighting where it needed to be, but was accessible by car. I think I decided on the final location only two weeks before their session. Sometimes, it takes your photographer a minute to location scout the perfect places, but just know, it's because we want it to be PERFECT!
4. 🫶🏼 Physical Touch: My instructions are usually pretty simple. I lightly pose families, because families usually flourish with a little guidance, especially if they aren't in front of the camera often. My biggest rule is "always be touching someone." When one person is standing off to the side, or not touching someone else from the family, they can look like a cast off, or as if they were not supposed to be in the photo. Megan, JJ, and the kids did a great job of always touching , or interacting, with the person next to them.
5. ♻️ Return Clients- I find returning to the same photographer, whoever your photographer may be, is often good for kids. Trevor and Ava know me, and have done sessions with me for years. The familiarity helps children to understand what they are getting into. When children feel confident and relaxed, the session flows in a different way. They also happen to call me Auntie Krista, so they may have a leg up in the "familiarity" category. ;)
You can make the same type of magic with me, or with another photographer, as long as you keep these 5 elements in mind.
Document your life. Go make magic.
