Engagement sessions are important, but probably not for the reason you think!

Engagement sessions are basically the dress rehearsal for being photographed on your wedding day. That’s why I include at least 30 minutes of engagement coverage with every wedding package.

We both learn a lot during this session.

You’ll learn how I work behind the camera, how I give direction, how to move naturally without worrying about posing, and what feels most like you. You’ll learn when to look at me and when to forget I’m even there, how to trust the process, and that the awkward feeling disappears pretty quickly. Most importantly, you’ll realize being photographed can actually feel easy.

And while you’re learning how I work, I’m learning you. I’m learning how you naturally interact, how much direction you need, what makes you laugh, what feels like you and what doesn’t, and when to step in versus when to let a moment unfold. I’m paying attention to all the little things that help you feel comfortable in front of my camera, so by the time your wedding day comes around, we’re not starting from scratch. You know what to expect from me, and I already know how to photograph you in a way that feels like you.

Because when your wedding day finally comes around, the LAST thing I want you thinking about is the camera.

3 mistakes I see photographers make with engagement photos:

1. Choosing a location because it photographs well, not because it fits the couple.

A pretty location is great, but the best photos happen when you actually feel comfortable in the space you’re in.

2. Over-posing everything.

You need direction (I’m never going to leave you standing there wondering what to do with your hands), but you also need room to move, interact and actually be yourselves.

3. Trying so hard to get the “perfect” photo that they miss the good stuff happening in between.

The laugh after the pose. The way you look at each other when you think I’m done shooting. The weird little things you do together. That’s the stuff that makes the photos yours.

You don’t have to know how to make your engagement photos look good. That’s my job.

I’ll help with the location, give you direction when you need it, keep things moving when it starts to feel stiff, and step back when something good is already happening.

The goal is never just pretty photos.

It’s photos that look really fu***ng good AND still feel like you.

My last post I showed you some lighting test shots of me. Now I want you to see what I’m testing for!

A few years ago after having such a hard time learning flash I decided to double down and really take the time to figure it out. I quickly fell in love with all things off camera flash!

I love walking into a space and figuring out how I want to light everything. You might see me carrying stands or even holding a flash in my hand!

Here’s when I use lighting, formal dances, speeches, grand entrances, details, guest portraits, sometimes when everyone’s getting ready I’ll put out my flash, most definitely the dance floor!

While I love flash it’s not appropriate in every situation so when I jump on my calls with my clients we talk this over, what restrictions I have for ceremony, what my couples prefer etc.

Make your engagement session stand out by including places and in this case horses that actually mean something to you! If you get nervous in front of the camera or a little anxious then adding a bit of your personality will help you relax TRUST ME!

Like these images are to die for and they showed up ready to go bc this where they spend a lot of their time together at! They showed me around and I picked the best spots for lighting and we posed a bit here and there but literally the best images are the ones where they’re just being them. No silly prompts, a little gentle guidance, I’ll tell you how to stand and what to do with your hands and maybe make you kiss but you’ll never look stiff.

I also used to ride horses and spent a lot of my youth around them so they don’t scare me. Kait barrel races which is so cool and I’m making her take me riding asap 💚

The best photos happen at places you actually love, places that feel like you. Places that serve double pep with a fridge cig.

The number one thing couples tell me before a session is that they want to look natural in front of the camera! Which from experience I know it can be hard to step in front of a stranger and perform.

So let’s quit performing. Let me create a space for you to be relaxed with each other. Where in this moment it’s just the two of you. I’ll tell you how to hold your body, where to place your hands, maybe a little kiss on your temple. Everything else we let breathe. We let the moments happen. Little laughs and eyeing each other.

It’s very laid back and chill and you’ll get natural photos back that actually feel like you!
