One of my long time wishes was to see the amazing sculptures in our temples in their original colorful form. Here is an attempt to colorize in their original colors from their time. This one is the Kiratarjuniyam panel from the Kanchi Kailasanathar temple. Shiva as a hunter dueling with Arjuna. Swipe to see the version as it is seen now.

Who is this guy? Have you ever seen anywhere in the world where a king who ruled with all the authority in the world leaving his statue at the entrance of a place of worship in the most humble manner bowing to the devotees?
You may have seen him in passing at the Thiruvannamalai temple. I wouldn’t blame you if you haven’t even noticed his presence. But if you patiently read on you’ll know who this giant among men was.
King Veera Vallala III was a powerhouse. He was called the Chola Prathistacharya - meaning the one who got back the throne for the cholas from pandyas. But his reign was tumultuous with the Delhi sultanate establishing a stronghold in Madurai and becoming Madurai Sultanate. In order to drive out the invaders he fought a decisive battle in samayapuram when he was in his 70s. He won the battle but treachery played its part and he was captured, skinned alive and his body hung for public display in Madurai. The news of the kings death reached Thiruvannamalai on the day of Thai Poosam. For the past 600 years and to this day, the thai poosam celebration in the temple is cut short symbolizing the events from the 14th century. The king may have died but the fire he lit did drive out the Sultanate for his generals Harihara and Bukka established the Vijayanagara empire and finished the job for him. And btw would you be surprised if I told you that the Kings last rites are performed by the Lord Arunachaleswara himself? Including the annual thithi to this day?

Crowdsourced Gopuram - if you need a bit of inspiration in life to achieve the impossible, just hear this. This imposing 171 feet Gopuram was constructed purely due to the will of one saintly woman a few centuries ago. Ammani Ammal was a devoted sivanadiyar from Thiruvannamalai who took it upon herself to build this imposing Gopuram that was left unfinished. She went door by door to collect donations. When it was not enough, the travelled all the way to the Mysore royal palace to secure the funds to complete it. While she had not much possessions on her own, her faith and will acted as her utmost strength to get this done. If you do visit the Thiruvannamalai temple, just walk to the North Gopuram (or the Ammani Ammal Gopuram), find her image on the Gopuram wall and pay your respects.

The Temple at Gangaikondan

Nestled in the heart of Pandya land in Tirunelveli, this magnificent temple is a Chola construction.

This place holds a special significance for me, as the ‘G’ in my name refers to the town of Gangaikondan.
