Even amid the lingering snow flurries, as more sections of water start opening up in the north country, geese are making their final splashdowns and the beavers are out making dam inspections and mulling plans for another exciting season of tree-felling! Thankful for these abundant signs of longer days and warmer climes ahead!

This has been the longest and snowiest winter I can remember here in the northeast. The snow has been so deep, in fact, that I haven't ventured out in search of wild animals as much as I normally would. Unfortunately I don't have the benefit of hiking trails or packed snowshoe trails, where I go into the national forests and the deepest woods. Staying on trails is no way to find wild animals! Over the course of the whole winter, pushing through waist-deep snow with my smaller camera and my compact 135mm lens, I came away with only one really good wildlife photograph. With the fresh snow still falling overnight in late March, I'd like to share it with you! I photographed this stunning bobcat on fresh snow (even without snowshoes, she didn't sink) in the national forest not far from Easton and Franconia, NH. I'll share the full story on my blog soon. This is your opportunity to have my first ever bobcat photograph - and I'm not sure I'll be able to top it. I could be vague, and simply insinuate that it's my BEST bobcat photograph I've ever taken, but it really is my first. Those of you who follow my work and visit my gallery may get the idea that I'm a long-time pro, but I actually do not have 30 years experience doing this like Thomas Mangelson or other well-known photographers. You're all along for the journey, WITH me, as I continue to push myself to get better and gain more experience with each passing year. Despite my background as a professional guide and my extensive travels across North America and all the landscapes and wildlife I've photographed, this is my first successful cat: the North American Bobcat. This one is titled "Silent Watcher" and it's now available to order on my website. I hope you love it!

What a sight, driving through Franconia Notch this weekend! Recent snows have encased the beautiful mountain pass in an icy hibernation. At last, it seems like the winters of old have returned, the ones we remember from our youth when the snowbanks seemed higher than houses and the north country remained under an ample white blanket until spring.

Drive it at your own risk, but wow - Kancamagus Pass is an absolute winter wonderland right now! Make sure you have winter shoes on your vehicle. All-season or summer tires are not going to cut it on our winter highways here in New Hampshire. Doesn't this picture look like a vintage ski postcard?

We wait all year to see Mt. Washington like this! I took this photograph today, finally with a blanket of snow - the color of cream, at dusk. We're getting a late bump of color as the last of the stubborn hardwoods decided to join the show this week. In the distance, you can see most of the hillsides are completely bare, as they have been for weeks! But all it takes is a clump of foliage here or there to remind us that it IS still October and the beauty of the White Mountains can leave you speechless at any moment! This might be one of the most majestic views of Mt. Washington I've ever photographed.
