To close out this session, I had to highlight a fun little trick I learned live during the shoot.

This kind of trending shutter drag/swirl was something I had never even thought to try. I watched it happen, tried it myself, and immediately understood why people have so much fun experimenting with it.

That’s one of the reasons I think educational and collaborative events with other photographers can be so valuable.

To be candid, I’m not much of a risk taker. But there’s something about photographing alongside other creatives in a relaxed environment that gives me permission to mess with my settings, twist my camera a little, and see what happens.

Sometimes you just need to be around other creative people. It’s amazing how quickly a little inspiration can change the way you think.

During this session, this little guy was having a tough time. I can’t really blame him — a swarm of photographers with cameras clicking away can be overwhelming.

At one point, Dad took him outside for a short walk to help him calm down. When they came back, they found Mom at the window and put his little feet up against the glass.

This photo may not be the star of the gallery, and it may not even make it onto the wall. But it still matters.

Because sometimes the photo is less about the “perfect” image and more about Dad saving the day, and a little boy having a fun moment in the middle of it all.

With this being one of the more creative (although simple!) setups I’ve ever seen, I was so happy I got some still BTS shots.

Normally I try to get video for behind the scenes, but I feel like these stills tell the story in a way video just couldn’t do justice.

There’s something about seeing the setup, the movement, and then the finished image all together that I really love.

I was reminded earlier this week just how fleeting time is.

One day you're nuzzling and smelling your baby's hair, and the next you're sending your toddler off to school, wondering how they got to be so big.

Capturing this moment, this day, and this season right now will only feel more and more important the further away you get from it… before these little toes get much bigger.

Some of my favorite moments from this session.

I love this set for the mix of traditional maternity family moments alongside all the creative ways we got to use the space — the parachute, the light, and even the posing our incredible model mama brought to the session.

The silhouette images and lighting were newer concepts for me, and I walked away with a whole new appreciation for what it takes to bring a creative vision to life through photography.

There’s something really special about getting to experiment, play, and leave a session feeling inspired to try something new.

This image and the coming posts were all from a shoot-a-long session I was fortunate enough to join back in March. I've posted about it in my stories a whole bunch but wanted to finally give these a proper place on my feed.
This was my second session “back” in this relaunch year of my business and one of the first after my second kiddo was born.
I was exhausted, had janky mismatched clothes that I thought looked semi-professional and I was trying to mentally piece together all the parts of running a creative business again.
In short, I was in a vulnerable and uncertain place – from self-confidence to mental capacity for creativity.
This session, and the fellow photographers who were there, felt like such a light for me.
Megan Koning completely inspired me with her genuine artistry (I hope some day people call me a true artist like her) and the other photographers built me up simply for showing up to an event like this only 6 months after having my second baby.
It could not have been a more fitting or helpful experience as I found my way back into this photography journey.

From the outside, it might look like I'm just taking photos.

The little glance and smile.
The split-second snuggle.
The shared laughter.
The tiny interactions that you'll forget happened until you see them again.

Years from now, I don't just want you to remember the photo.

The images I almost missed.
The light was fading. The session was winding down. And I almost skipped the nursery entirely.
But I decided to take just a few more photos before calling it a day — and found the little details that told even more of their story.
A Bible on the dresser. Stuffed animals waiting in the crib. A mother gathering her baby into her arms and holding her close. Sometimes the moments that almost don’t happen are the ones we end up liking best.
