This one was special.

At the end of March 2020, when the pandemic was brand new and the severity and duration were quite unknown, Markus and I made the difficult decision to bring our children to their grandparents' homes for the remainder of the school year. It was too challenging to juggle virtual schooling for all four while both of us continued to work at the hospital. We knew that my "retirement" was right around the corner in May, so we needed a plan to bridge us to that. We called our parents on a Wednesday night, and they instantaneously said "Yes. Bring them." By Friday, I was driving across the country to drop them off.

This film is the story of our children's time in Tucson, Arizona with Markus's parents. For the seven weeks that we were apart, Henry and Wilhelmina stayed with my parents in Colorado, while Silas and Timothy were with Oma and Opa.

I filmed this in late May 2020 when I came to pick them all up, just days after transitioning into my role as a stay at home mom. I wanted to capture the special bonds that developed between grandparents and grandchildren, highlight the many adventures they had, and also document the home that was the setting for such a pivotal time in our kids' lives.

I surprised Gerd and Kathy with this video for Christmas. We all relived the moments like it was just yesterday, and will continue to savor the happy memories for years to come. Our children are tremendously blessed to have such loving, energetic, generous grandparents.

Welcome to CoronaCamp Arizona.

These video clips are from the first time we met her at 2 weeks old. I'd never even looked at them until today, but it was such a sweet walk down memory lane, especially the comments from our six-year-old.

This film is also a reminder of how much changes in one year! Document the here and now!

I love the reflection of their fingers on the shiny black piano. I love her contentedness in her Papa's lap. I love his love for the piano, and I especially love his love for her.

Christmas Eve a few years ago. This was a "testing the light" photo, with no one posed or prepared. The sunburst off the piano was a happy accident. Often, I find myself drawn to these snapshots more than carefully choreographed ones. Beauty in the ordinary.

I shot these video clips in March 2017 without any official training or instruction on how to eventually turn it into a film. We spent just over a week visiting my husband's family in Germany with our two youngest children. During the trip, we reunited with our beloved first and second au pairs, met our soon-to-be fourth au pair for the first time, and also met up with a college teammate of mine who is now living in Berlin. Five months after living it, I finally turned it into this film.

The kids have asked to watch this film in particular dozens and dozens of times over the years. Germany is a long way away--especially in a pandemic--and this makes our loved ones feel a little less distant. Markus's beloved grandmother is in heaven now, and we will forever treasure seeing her vibrant and strong and laughing heartily, holding our children in her arms. I love when my son curls his sister's baby hand into his own pudgy toddler fingers. And I love reliving the greatest playground I've ever been to, where the adults played even more than the children.

What is it that makes you want to freeze time every time you see it in real life? Or what is it that doesn't feel monumental at all, but you know in five years, you'll wish you could go back and live it again, if just for a moment?

I love that photographs are a snapshot of our lives. Or of the world around us. Time stands still, and magically, that transient moment is documented forever. Photography is useful, beautiful, and inspiring for record keeping and art alike.

But Video is captivating. The movement. The sound. The relationships and nuanced interactions. The developmental stages, live and in action. It is immersive, tangible, and transporting, and is the closest thing to reliving those memories comprehensively.

A week ago, I spent 1 hour and 15 minutes with the Loudermilk family, tagging along while they had an adventure at a Christmas tree farm. In that brief time, we got a family portrait, special shots with daughters and sons, sisters and brothers, husband and wife, some candid interactions captured in stills, and we got this: a 2 minute 45 second time capsule with their five children at Christmastime.

Thank you, Michael and Victoria, for sharing your beautiful family. These moment are worth cherishing for generations to come.

🎥 Sound on, enjoy... and let me know if you'd like me to document your family's story for you 🥰

This was the very first video I ever created. It was April 2017, and my last baby was about to turn one. The older three were growing and learning by leaps and bounds, and I wanted to freeze these moments in a visual auditory tangible time capsule.

I wanted to hear their coos, giggles, exclamations, and lisps. In a wondrous split second, I was even lucky enough to catch my daughter's first "mama" in this film.

I wanted to see their pudgy fingers, and watch their toddling gates, while hearing the footfall of their soft baby feet. I wanted to capture the little things they delighted in each day, and I wanted to witness the way they interacted—with each other and with me.

This project took me a long time to complete, as I learned about video editing from scratch. Four and a half years later, I'm so grateful I will have these moments forever.

Two knights, a princess,
And her beloved dragon:
Adventure awaits!

My annual tradition of making Halloween costumes for the kids continues. This year, they requested a reprise of our theme from 2013, when our third was in utero and our fourth was still a whisper in our imaginations!

Seven happy kids,
Loving and adventurous;
Courageous parents.

Mrs. Dr. Hughes and I worked as pediatricians together at Arkansas Children's. We retired the exact same day to transition to life as stay-at-home moms. Both of our blessings have multiplied since then, but her people multiplied too! Last month, they celebrated the adoption of their youngest son and daughter.

Heartfelt congratulations to the Hughes Family, party of NINE.
