This bull’s velvet looks like the ice cream flavor “moose tracks” with some chocolate and vanilla swirl 🤣🫎🍦.

This time of year moose in Northern Minnesota take to the lakes, ponds, and rivers. They dine on aquatic vegetation and use the water to get temporary relief from the hordes of mosquitoes and biting flies that follow them closely. The cooler water also helps them regulate their temperature in the heat of summer.

Lake Superior Shoreline on April 4th, 2026. When strong northeast winds come across the lake the waves can build up and put on quite a show! This is a popular spot to storm watch and typically April is a good month for it! Looks a lot like spring out here 😅

One morning my friend and I went searching for the ghost of the Northwoods. When a snowshoe hare darted out of the edge of the woods we knew it could be game time. Sure enough a male lynx came sauntering out along the exact same path. It was vocalizing as it came close; we are in the heart of the lynx breeding season. To our amazement he sat down just 30 yards away on a snow bank. For a few minutes he looked around, listening, and continued to bark its mating call. The lynx seemed completely unconcerned with our presence. What a morning!

This is not a photo! Look how absolutely still the lynx is as it stalks a snowshoe hare. Aside from the slight rise and fall of its chest, it looks like a still image.

Daytime lynx on the wetland edge.

This camera is powered by rechargeable AA’s. I deployed the camera on November 8th and they are still going strong, even through a stretch of sub-zero temperatures.

Canada Lynx at night during falling snow and sub-zero temperatures. The boreal forest is a harsh place to live but the Lynx thrive there.

A snowy flight through mature white pines of the Superior National Forest. Winter clings to the landscape of the Boreal Forest. It is here where my photography and career meet; monitoring and documenting the wildlife and the ecology of Northeastern Minnesota.
