Gerenuks are expert foragers. By rearing up on spindly legs and craning its long neck, this species can reach tasty tree leaves that are out of range for most antelopes, reducing the amount of competition for food they might otherwise face. Meet one of the smallest crocodile species in the world - the West African dwarf crocodile. A nocturnal species, these crocs will spend the day resting in the water, coming to life at night in order to hunt prey. They have a varied diet, feeding on everything from birds and small mammals to millipedes and beetle larvae. Photos taken at Alexandria Zoological Park.

Leatherback sea turtles, like this half-day-old hatchling, are just one of seven sea turtle species you are helping to save by reducing your use of single-use plastic products! Each plastic bag, bottle, or straw you skip is one less that could make its way into the ocean, protecting a species that has traveled our seas for over 100 million years.

Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes, and they are the unsung heroes of our world.

Critters like the ones you see here work tirelessly to pollinate plants that are responsible for producing up to a third of our food supply.

Pollination is also the first step in the process that allows for the spread of plants across a landscape, preventing soil erosion and combating the effects of climate change.

Dumpling is not excited for Monday to come.

With short, stubby legs, it isn’t easy for striped skunks to outrun trouble, so they’ve developed a unique defense system to protect themselves from predators.

When cornered, a skunk will first try to frighten the predator by turning its back, raising its tail, and arching its back while stomping its feet. If this display proves unsuccessful, the skunk will resort to spraying the animal with a strong-smelling fluid that can sting the eyes of the predator, giving the skunk just enough time to escape.

The Nicobar pigeon is the only living member of the genus Caloenus. Once plentiful throughout its range, their numbers in the wild have been declining as these birds are hunted for human consumption and captured for sale in the illegal pet trade. Found in a variety of habitats across the Americas, mountain lions have the widest range of any land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. They are the world’s fourth largest wildcat, with stocky large hind legs and a tail that measures up to a third of its body length. Those hind legs and long tail give this cat the power and balance needed to achieve 40-foot-long horizontal jumps and 18-foot vertical jumps. Photos taken at Rolling Hills Zoo.

Out of 33 species of jerboa, the long-eared jerboa wins the award for most oddly-proportioned family member. With ears that are two-thirds as long as its body, the animal has one of the largest ear-to-body ratios in the animal kingdom! As if their ears weren’t large enough, the jerboa’s hind legs are four times as long as their front legs, making them extremely talented at leaping. Photos taken at Московский зоопарк/Moscow Zoo.

Meet the Pac-man frog. Chacoan horned frogs, like this one at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium are known for trying to consume prey larger than themselves. Thanks to a strong bite and a row of teeth along their upper jaw, they can immobilize larger prey, but unfortunately, those teeth mean they can’t release prey once it is caught. This means that oversized prey can often become a choking hazard, sometimes leading to death.
