Out of 33 species of jerboa, the long-eared jerboa wins the award for most oddly-proportioned family member. With ears that are two-thirds as long as its body, the animal has one of the largest ear-to-body ratios in the animal kingdom! As if their ears weren’t large enough, the jerboa’s hind legs are four times as long as their front legs, making them extremely talented at leaping. Photo taken at Московский зоопарк/Moscow Zoo.

It is hard to believe this stunning male golden stag beetle is real and not an impressive piece of art. Found in Tasmania and south-eastern mainland Australia, adults will move about on the forest floor and drink the nectar of flowers, especially eucalypts. Photo taken at Kingdom of Beetle Taiwan.

Very rare and highly secretive, not much is known about the endangered Gee’s golden langur. Unlike other species of langurs that appear unafraid of humans, researchers have said that this monkey works hard to avoid human interactions, making them extremely difficult to observe in the wild. What we do know is that like other monkeys in the Colobinae subfamily, the golden langur has a stomach designed to break down the hard-to-digest cellulose in leaves, reflecting its diet of leaf buds, fruits, flowers, seeds, and twigs. A healthy owl population is a sign of a balanced ecosystem. In order for owls to thrive, populations of the species they prey upon must be abundant and healthy as well - a pattern that continues down the entire food chain. This means that if the health or number of prey species declines, something in the environment has changed and is altering the natural structure of the food web. A world without owls would spell trouble for humans, as their role as a top predator of rodents protects us from the spread of diseases and protects our crops from being raided.

The transparent skin of the Yuruani glass frog gives us an impressive view of the inner workings of this amphibian, with its internal organs, bones, and muscles on full display. Usually green with red, blue, yellow, or white markings, these remarkable frogs reside along streams and rivers in the tropical forests of South America. Video taken at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre.

Lucy, the Florida panther who called ZooTampa at Lowry Park home for nearly two decades, passed away earlier this year. Arriving as a cub with an injury that kept her from being a candidate for release back into the wild, Lucy became an incredible ambassador for her species. Not only was she a favorite among visitors to Zoo Tampa, she also had her image projected onto the Empire State Building in New York City and was featured on a US postage stamp. Throughout her life, she was a powerful reminder of our duty to coexist and protect the native species that share our backyards.

Extinction is now, but so is conservation. I hope you’ll fall in love with the species of the Photo Ark just like I have and join efforts to help save them. The future of Earth’s wonderful and diverse species is still being written - pick up a pen and help me write it.

The Hawaiian spiny lobster has historically been the subject of extensive commercial and recreational fishing. However, this species is now protected in Hawaii and regulations are helping to maintain their population. Those regulations include a defined “no catch” season, and the prohibition of taking females with eggs. Video taken at Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii.

We’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Photo Ark project. Over the years I’ve traveled to more than 1,000 facilities in over 50 countries on six different continents. Back when it all started I had no idea what this would become. As of this year, I’ve photographed over 18,000 animals. That’s 18,000 species - each with a story to tell; each so worth saving.

From now on, saving species must be intentional. We cannot take it for granted anymore that these species will thrive on their own - they need our help. These conservation heroes, that’s what they’re all about.
