Took a little mental journey back to Port Chalmers, New Zealand (near Dunedin) today to edit a few more favorite shots of the seals. If you get a chance, go.

I've been spending a lot of time curating my library to find my voice as a photographer. This downtown Minneapolis street scene first caught my eye because of how the light streaked through the buildings on that bitter cold morning. But then I noticed the light also highlighting two distinct ways that different people start their day. Title: Contrasting Routines.

Attending my first youth baseball game in many years, a few things caught my attention. The new surface around the pitching mound and home plate. I like how it jumps when pitches bounce off of it. Guessing it was conceived out of concern for clean uniforms and safety. Speaking of safety, I found the absolute safest spot at a youth baseball game is by that sign in the second shot.

Truth be told, I coached baseball for 25+ years starting in high school. I love the atmosphere. The mix of energy and confusion of players trying to grasp this complex new game. And the best is the lightbulbs that go off as each kid discovers the rhythm and flow of the game. Hats off to all the parents that endure the early years of this sport. The reward of more exciting, emotional, hard-fought games are just around the corner.

Play ball.
