The first widely recognized Black American photographer was James Presley Ball. In the 1840s he opened his own studio and became famous for his portraits. He photographed everyday people as well as big names like Frederick Douglass and Ulysses S Grant 🙌🏽 His work gave Black families the chance to see themselves beautifully represented at a time when dignity and pride were often denied. 💕 Today we celebrate pioneers like him who paved the way for Black photographers everywhere 🌟
