It's been a long time since I shared anything at all, life has a habit of getting in the way some times & typically it's never planned.

Today, April 19 is the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.
This view shows 9:01 gate symbolized the last minute of innocence for our nation in regards to domestic terrorism. The 9:03 gate - a symbolic reference to the first moment of recovery, the moment when grieving & healing began. The time of 9:02 a.m. stretches between the two, presenting a tragically long minute in which citizens were killed, survived and changed forever.

Living there at the time & participating in the recovery efforts at the Murrah Bldg, I think back to a time when I witnessed so much compassion & caring. It was a tragic time but folks put human life & ordinary people before politics.

Today, August 7th marks the 82nd anniversary Operation Watchtower - the first major amphibious landing for WWII by the U.S. The 1st Marine Division landed on Guadalcanal which was the longest campaign of the Pacific theatre. The Guadalcanal American Memorial is a WWII monument located on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands ( South Pacific) - it overlooks the Pacific Ocean & sits atop the first hill occupied by American Forces. Army, Navy, Coast Guard & Marines were all involved in the Battle of Guadalcanal.

GLENRIO ghost town straddles the Texas & New Mexico state line. Originally a Mobil gas station it also served as a Post Office. On the left side of the door, you can just barely make out the words "Glenrio, N Mex". Tho' the P.O. was in New Mexico the Rock Island RR delivered the mail to Glenrio, TX - not really too sure how that all worked out !

Another variation of the Spiny Lizard with some pretty blue scales on his back. What I am learning is that lizards are VERY curious characters & while they may move quickly, they also will stop & watch & actually turn their heads to watch you. Fun to play with!

Tucumcari Tonite ! This slogan posted on hundreds of billboard along the highways was one of the most successful advertising campaigns undertaken. It enticed many a traveler to come explore the town on the eastern edge of New Mexico. Tucumcari was one of the inspirations for the Pixar movie ‘Cars’ along with several over Route 66 towns.

A Salt Mine located in the Amboy Salt Flats. The salt flats are actually part of a larger dry bed lake called Bristol Lake - one of the largest in the world & located just off old Route 66 in California. The salt has an average thickness of 5 ft. Under the salt body is a bed of bluish clay 8 to 10 ft thick & and then another bed of salt reported to average 5 feet in thickness.

1920's GMC truck - During one of our hikes into Joshua Tree (Mojave Desert), we came across this decomposing 100 yr old GMC truck. Weathered & rusting, it is slowly decomposing although it will probably still be a presence for many more decades. Amazing that there was still some rubber tubing on one of the wheels. FYI - research with folks way more knowledgeable than me about old cars have identified this particular vehicle as an early 1920's GMC truck.

Western Diamondback Rattlesnake - one of three diamondbacks which we have come across thus far in our trip. This fella seemed quite comfortable spending the afternoon curled up in the crook of this tree. Eventually he began to slither down the bark giving me a good opportunity to capture both his head & his distinctive black and white tail.

Here's a fun fact - rattlesnakes can move its rattle back & forth 60 or more times per second !
