September is for the Sporting Pups.

Calling all retrievers, spaniels, setters & pointers.

The ballers, the swimmers & the professional bird spotters. Let’s celebrate the ears that fly and the tails that never clock out.

Yep. You’re my September Spotlight.

I’m selecting a handful of Kentucky sporting dogs for a special photography project celebrating all that beautiful, athletic, slightly ridiculous dog-ness.

Selected pups receive a complimentary photography session + $150 toward custom artwork.
No purchase required. But fair warning: I plan to make choosing favorites wildly inconvenient.

Think your pup belongs in the spotlight? Link in bio.

Well, this is pretty cool! If you have a chance to get a copy of the August edition of TOPS magazine, you will get to see one of my pet images of Saved by Fate Dog Rescue cofounder, Mara DeLaus and her adorable pup, Pixie! Yes, I know there’s only two days left in the month , but you can always read their magazine online 😀regardless of the month! Which also reminds me there is 2 days left in Mirror Twin’s Too Dog contest!

Hi, I’m Heather. Since there are some new faces around here, I thought it was time to reintroduce myself.

First things first: I will never look this put together at your dog’s photo session.

I’ll probably be sweaty. My hair will have surrendered. And there’s a very good chance I’ll be wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt even when Kentucky is roughly the temperature of the sun.

There is a method to my madness.

Throughout your session, I’ll be lying in the grass, crawling through weeds, kneeling in dirt and occasionally wondering, What exactly just crawled across my arm? Long sleeves and pants give me at least a fighting chance against ticks, creepy-crawlies, poison ivy and whatever else Kentucky has hiding down there.

All that time on the ground has a purpose.

I photograph your pup from down low so they can look as elevated in your photographs as they are in your life.

Big. Beautiful. Full of personality. And worthy of taking up some serious space on your walls.

A little more about the person rolling around in the grass with the camera.

I live in Lexington, Kentucky, and I love it here. The seasons, the rolling countryside, the horse farms and the people have made Kentucky feel very much like home.

But I am, and always will be, a Texas girl from Austin, and yes, burnt orange runs deep in my blood.

And, of course, my own two dogs managed to sneak into my self-portrait because apparently a photograph of me without dogs would be false advertising.

So, hi. I’m Heather.

Dog photographer. Texas girl. Kentucky transplant. Longhorn. Professional ground-layer. Occasional tick checker.

Because Kentucky weather may be unpredictable
but your adorable dog is one thing we can count on.
When Kentucky weather refuses to cooperate… we head to the studio.

This adorable mother-daughter duo has the down-down pose down!

Yes, I actually WANT the leash in the photo.
One of the questions I hear all the time is, “Does my dog need to be off leash for photos?”
Nope. Not even a little bit.
Safety comes first during my sessions, so if your dog needs a leash, we use one.

I would much rather have a happy, safe dog on a leash than spend the entire session worrying about whether someone is about to make a run for Kentucky.
Once I have the expression, pose and light I want, the leash can disappear during editing.
Your dog stays safe. And we still get the beautiful photograph.

You would never belive there was a human in the background.
Because when you see the finished image, you see a dog running straight toward the camera with that gloriously happy face.
What you don’t see is the person standing right behind them helping us make the whole thing happen.
Dog photography is rarely neat and tidy behind the scenes. There are leashes. People. Treats. Weird noises. Repositioning. Someone occasionally jumping out of the frame.
I don't wait around for everything to magically become perfect.
I love to discover the moment hiding inside all of that chaos.
So yes, your dog can absolutely have beautiful photographs even if we need a little help behind the scenes.
