I think I am quick to forget how much of love is claiming it.
I have always been scared to call someone my best friend. What if that isn’t how they see me?
I’ve always been nervous to admit how important someone is to me because what if I barely matter to them, you know?

But I think I’ve always underestimated how much of loving someone is just paying attention, remembering, showing up, and doing it publicly. So if I love you, why shouldn’t I claim you as my favorite, my best, my only? If I love you, why shouldn’t I beg to stand next to you, invite myself to come, and ask if I can see you again soon?

I think we’re all quick to underestimate how much of love is just paying attention. How much of loving someone is recognizing that the face they are making means they’re stressed, hungry, sad, or lonely. We underestimate how much of loving someone is knowing their coffee order, their favorite jacket to grab when packing a picnic, and their book preferences well enough to suggest a new one. How much of loving is holding them when they need to be held and laughing when they need someone to see the humor in the situation. I think we underestimate how much of love is standing there, ready to support in whatever way is needed, but also ready to just stand there, smiling.
Halle & Kellen love each other, but that was not the only love story involved in their wedding day. After all, how much of love is showing up when you’re wanted?
Luke showed up for Kellen when he agreed to answer to Pookie all day.
Matt showed up for Halle when he helped her make a pink-heart photo prop.
Jordan showed up for both of them when he got licensed to perform their ceremony.
Andrew showed up for Alexa when he gave her his jacket so she wouldn’t be cold.
Dave showed up for Melinda when he bought her a piece of jewelry to celebrate their love story.
Darcy showed up for Abby when she recognized the nervous look on her face before her speech and checked in to make sure she was okay.
And it’s not just these stories - but many more.

These are love stories.
These are “You are my favorite,” “you are my best,” “you matter to me” stories.
I’m so glad to work in love stories.

I don’t know if dogs can smile but I know Bruno’s face changes when he looks at Lexi.

It’s so funny photographing a dog in his own house because, obviously, he has no idea that we have scheduled a photo session. He lives with a videographer, so he recognizes a camera, but he has no idea that we’re here for a purpose! He has no interest in our plans. He has his routines and his favorite spots and his very strong opinions about where he would like to be, even if Lexi cleaned off his corner of the couch for the photos. He went back anyway. Of course he did.

He’d sit there, look outside the window for a minute, and then turn around to find Lexi. And every time he did, his whole face changed. I want to relive this over.

It’s not just that Bruno is very cute, or that he has a favorite place on the couch, or that vanilla ice cream is apparently one of his favorite foods and the perfect compensation for participating in a photography session.
It’s that Bruno’s face seems to grin when he looks at Lexi, but her face definitely is all smiles when she looks at him.

Going forward, I think I may need to cancel all other services so I can focus on photos of dog owners feeding their dogs vanilla ice cream cones. It simply might not get any better than this!

Lexi, thank you over and over again for being so quick to say yes when I want to do something specific in photos. You’re lovely. Your house is lovely. And my goodness, you have one adorable dog! :)

Humans have a pretty remarkable knack for making a space a home.

There’s no rules to it that I can figure out. Nothing that will always turn walls and a roof into the place you can’t wait to get to after a long day. I swear that sometimes it just takes a couch that has been sat on a thousand times and a few books stacked on a shelf in the corner. Other spaces don’t feel like a home without the varied tchotchkes and souvenirs from a life well lived, visible and both a random array and a curated medley. This isn’t in my wheelhouse. I can’t turn a space cozy or make a room warm. I have no skill in this, but I know it when I see it. I know when a house feels like home.

Meg and Kyler won’t live in this house forever. Someday, they’ll move their things into another space and they’ll make that one home. But this? This will always be the first house Tommi ever lived in.

And I loved getting to see it.
Meg covered their walls in memories. (Some of which I got to photograph myself! AHH & YAY!) I got to see their room and it was beautiful. I never get to see someone else’s bedroom! Why don’t adults spend time in their rooms? I have close friends whose bedrooms I have never been in and who have never seen mine. It feels like a betrayal of trust to invite you to peek into Meg&Kylers. I promise, it was as lovely as it looks.

And then there was Tommi.
She is so new to this house - new to theirs world! I know that I am easily won over, but there really is some magic in photographing a person’s house. Meg and Kyler have made a home here.
And now Tommi gets to grow up knowing this was where she started! She’ll recognize the rooms where her parents first cuddled her, fed her, and rocked her. And there’s some magic in that.

I cannot begin to describe the fun I had celebrating their love story. Their story wasn’t full of the adventurous ups and downs of a romantic comedy - after all, they both knew from the start that they’d found their person - but because they are both adventurers, their story is an exciting one.

Have you ever seen someone make something look so appealing that it makes you wonder how’d it would go for you?

I’ve heard great harmonica players that made me want to pick up one for myself. I’ve seen people perform on stage and it’s made me wonder if I should try out for the next play. Every time I see a girl with bangs, I consider getting them myself.

Ally and Jake make western style look so good, I want to buy myself some boots. When I left their session, I said “I want little cowboy sons!” I was turned to a pile of mush watching the boys wrestle and play in their jeans and hats.

They certainly have made a beautiful life for themselves.

For someone who doesn’t watch a lot of sports, I am great at being a fan. I love to root for people.

From the minute I first spoke to Meg, I was rooting for her. In April 2024, I took photos of them in the lilac fields and in-between every shutter click we gabbed and gabbed. Her *at the time* boyfriend literally required no scripting from me. I’d be seconds away from suggesting he brush her hair out of her eyes and he’d be doing it already, holding her hands whenever his were empty, and grinning at her. It was the thrill of my career that she invited me to her wedding. I loved every minute of it. She is still saved in my Contacts as Meg! 🤍👰‍♀️ I don’t think I will ever update it.

She texted me this spring to ask about maternity photos. This life update from her had me in tears. I just am so absolutely rooting for her and Kyler to have the exact life they deserve, those two angels.

She messaged me again yesterday to let me know that they’re expecting baby Fletcher to join the world today. I don’t know how to express this in a way that doesn’t make it weirdly about me, but I am so freaking happy that I picked up a camera a decade ago and now I get to take photos the Fletcher family. Harper is going to be such a good dog sister and we already know that Meg and Kyler, who love others and each other so well, are going to be the world’s kindest parents.

I dare you to ask me to tell you a love story.

I won’t tell you one I made up or one of my own. I won’t retell one that I saw in a movie or read in a book. Instead, I’ll tell you about one that was told to me. I’ll tell you about the one I heard from people who were lucky enough to witness it firsthand. I’ll tell you the story of the world’s most beautiful princess and her prince and the way they’d happily do anything for their friends but would prefer not to ask anything of anyone. I’ll tell you about how the princess’ friends know the depth of her kindness. I’ll tell you about how the prince’s friends tease him that he became the best version of himself when he met the princess. I’ll tell you about a party they threw where the prince changed the garbage bags himself, rather than ask anyone else to do it. I’ll tell you about the princess who spoke to her party staff and checked in to make sure they had everything they needed.

I heard the details of this love story from Kami, Kinsey, and Trey. They told the story of people who are wonderful on their own, but somehow even better together.

It’s a lovely story and it has a happy ending. I hope I get to tell you all about it someday.

Q + J, I am out of words to talk about how beautiful you are, but I hope you know how much it speaks to your character the way that others are so quick to extol you, applaud you, and root for you. It speaks to your kindness and your extraordinary reputations. I am so grateful that you invited me to spend some time with you to celebrate your love story. I loved every moment of it but *especially* the trivia over dinner, the cake cutting, Jace giggling as you swung him in the yard, Jack and Mayzie joining for a few photos and a lot of pets and kissing, and lighting ci**rs in complete darkness at the end of the night.

This is what I mean when I say that love looks like something. This is what love looks like. It’s irresistible, right? Impossible to look away from. For me, it’s impossible to be near without smiling.

There’s a line by a poet that I don’t actually remember - Richard Wilbur, I think - that goes something like “I would wish for you again, one hundred times I would wish for you, but I would always wish to start life with you sooner.” I love the feeling it evokes, even half-remembered, that sometimes we wish we could have filled our earlier memories with the people we love today. These two have been in love for years and their early memories overlap. They lived in Moab together and were fishing guides. They found each other young and made memories, and now they get to spend all of their lives together, making more memories. I mean, come on. That is the dream. Tomorrow they are getting married in a castle, which is also the dream.

I am so excited to be there to witness a very small slice of their memory-making together. Love. It’s so pretty to see when it’s done well.

Happy Father’s Day to all the great fathers out there and especially to this one who is celebrating as a first time dad today! This father is so sweet with Baby Beckett and somehow even sweeter with Taylor, he’s very easy to like and he recently aided me in pulling a prank on our shared friend, which means he’s now a forever pal, he is one of those men whose children will grow up without ever learning what it feels like to have an absent or angry parent and instead - I am confident - will always know that they can ask their dad for help.

Some Dads really make this holiday one worth celebrating!

I swear to sample-heaven that a dozen or more of my formative childhood memories were made at Costco. I distinctly remember tasting rice pudding for the first time ever; I did not like it. I remember never wanting to run errands with my mom - unless Costco was on the list and then I’d call “Shotgun” so I could sit in the front seat on the drive there. I remember my grandma teaching me how to eavesdrop on couples who were figuring out if they really needed a new blender or if they could eat an entire case of apples before they went bad. I remember loving it when the receipt-checkers drew a smiley face on the receipt I handed them. I remember the thrill of a hot dog and a soda for $1.50 and Costco’s foodcourt being close enough to my high school that I could drive there at lunch.

Costco is formative.

I had so much fun trailing behind Sage. This was an abnormal photoshoot because his parents were doing their normal shopping. I loved it. Going forward, I want to do at least half of all my family sessions at Costco. We had so much fun! He - like all of us - loves going to Costco. He especially loves the hot dog at the end.
