Today I managed to get my wife to go with me to spend a day immersed in bonsai and bonsai culture, we went to the MidAtlantic Bonsai Festival and then Nature’s Way Bonsai in Harrisburg. Here are some of my favorite trees from the festival. I’ll try to answer any questions you have if I can.

Did the Dale-Engle-Walker Trail today to see where spring is at—highlights include Dutchman’s Breeches, Bloodroot (which is SUPER toxic!), a merganser, an eastern slider, and a brown thrasher which I had never seen before.

My first attempt at making a chair, to replace my office chair. Consistent with my style of curves and live edges. I reused the base of my old chair then built this from walnut, maple, and cherry. Finished with tung oil then shellac. I wanted something without arms because arms get in the way when I’m noodling on the guitar! Thoughts?

For a long time I've had this piece of wood not knowing what to do with it. It's white oak with interesting grain and a split running through it that I filled with resin a year or two ago. I suddenly realized it would be perfect as a laptop stand because by cutting it in half and adding mitered angles I could really showcase the resin color! I call this style "Cyberwood" ;) BTW it's also adjustable in case Apple decides to start making MBPs thinner or thicker!

Now that we’re out of the deep freeze here, it’s time for tree tapping! I have five walnuts and one sugar maple that I tap annually. Don’t get a lot of syrup but what I do get is damn tasty.

I have mixed feelings about how this bowl turned out. I turned it from a hunk of walnut burl that I salvaged from a cut down tree behind my house a couple of years ago. It was an odd shape and I thought I’d make an odd bowl from it, might be TOO odd.
