Southern Maryland Critique SIG
Our group is working hard this week to create the photography exhibit at the St Mary’s County Fair. It‘s a pretty popular attraction. The competition featured a total of 37 categories divided between adults, juniors (10-17) and childen (through 9). We had some unexpected difficulties when we lost several judges at the last minute, but Ken Barlow and Wayne Thomas (new apprentice judges) and Tonya Freed, a former club member (recorder), helped Joanna Macaulay (judge) out at the last minute, and it all worked out fine with some quick training. Kudos to all the volunteers and extra helpers (some nonmembers) for their hard work. Special thanks to Sam Lane as the primary Fair contact and leader of the Fair exhibit.

September Landscape SIG Field Trip to Eastern State Penitentiary
On September 22, 11 members of the Landscape SIG traveled to Philadelphia to photograph the Eastern State Penitentiary. Open in 1829 and active until 1971, this preserved ruin is a unique gem. There were many opportunities to shoot the exterior as well as the interior hallways and cells. In addition, the details such as windows, doors and peeling paint made for interesting subjects. Different techniques were tried including iPhone images, close-ups and black and white. We finished a little after 2 and had a wonderful Greek lunch nearby. Everyone enjoyed the day and we are looking forward to returning in the future.

August Landscape and Macro SIG Field Trip to Ritter Farm
On August 10, about 20 members of the Landscape and Marco SIGs met at Ritter Farm in Harbeson to photograph the flowers. We were able to arrive starting at 7 AM. This gave us calm conditions during the cooler part of the day. This year the farm did not plant nearly as many sunflowers as previous years but they did have several rows of colorful zinnias. The group was able to photograph a variety of subjects including the farm’s goats, birds and bugs, and close-ups. There were also creative techniques used. By 9:00 everyone was feeling the heat and humidity and finished shooting.

Joanna Macaulay
Joanna Macaulay has volunteered to be the official photographer for the River Concert Series for 13 years and St Mary’s College of Maryland has decided to end the concerts at their location on July 24th. Joanna is sad, like many other St Mary’s County residents and visitors. The mostly classical and Jazz concerts began in 1999 and averaged 4500 concert goers per concert. It was based on outdoor concert series like Tanglewood Music Festival. The music director, Jeffrey Silberschlag, is currently looking for new local venues, so locals haven’t given up hope yet.

Joanna had the privilege of meeting many well known musicians and many takented orchestra musicans over the years and the conductor. She has photographed Maureen McGovern, Broadway stars like Hilary Kole and Kate Baldwin, N’Kenge, Pedro Giraudo, and more. Joanna has located her digital concert photos back to 2002.

Pictures: Chesapeake Orchestra, Maureen McGovern, N’Kenge, Brian Ganz, pianist with Jeffrey Silberschlag, conductor.
