This experience was nothing short of amazing. Surrounded by passionate photographers, all deeply invested in their craft, we sat along the shoreline with our feet in the water, thousands of dollars of gear in hand and cameras angled toward the sky in anticipation of what was about to unfold. I was captivated by the wildlife activity and had some great conversations with people who had traveled from far and wide to witness this remarkable natural event.

Normally, peregrine falcons hunt smaller, fast-moving birds, shorebirds, pigeons, things they can strike midair and carry. Pelicans are huge by comparison, so they’re not typical prey. That’s what makes this behavior stand out.

During mating season, especially when this female peregrine is nesting or defending a territory, her priorities shift. She becomes extremely aggressive and protective. At this location, one particular female has been observed repeatedly dive-bombing pelicans as they glide along the cliffs for over a decade! This isn’t really about hunting, it’s about territorial defense and dominance display.

Getting these little creatures right at their peak color flare is always the challenge, but it’s one I love chasing. Once that moment hits, it’s all about having your settings dialed so everything comes out tack sharp. Then making sure the background actually works with the subject. With enough patience and understanding, you start to predict all these little moments and that’s when you’re ready to let the shutter fly.
