Twenty-five years. And it gets more vivid as time goes on.

I was a 12-year-old 7th grader in my second period strings class when the middle school principal announced the news over the PA after the South Tower got hit. My teacher says, “well, let’s go find a tv” and down the hall we go from the elementary classroom to the middle school lobby. We all would watch until it was time for third period classes to begin. That announcement set the tone for the day.

My next three classes put their lessons on hold as we saw the scope of it all. The Pentagon struck, Flight 93 crashing outside of Shanksville, the South Tower falling and the North Tower doing the same 25 minutes later. Coverage of the search and rescue eventually turning into a recovery mission was watched on and off for days - it was take less than two weeks for lessons to be taught as they normally were. Football games at home would mention the attacks before performing the National Anthem until the end of the season.

As I’ve gotten older, I started to understand the why’s and I felt the losses more. Footage I saw that day and anything new to me would either drive me to tears or say that once is enough. This isn’t a day that anybody wants to remember and talk about, but we have to do so. As forgotten history is bound to be repeated.
