Watching the Black Skimmer stand silent on the sand, completely dominating the foreground—it’s a study in stark contrasts. Its glossy black upperparts against the pure white underparts make it impossible to ignore against the pale sand and green debris.

These coastal beaches are vital; Black Skimmers commonly use sandy beaches and sandbars in Southwest Florida for resting and roosting, and this spot was perfect. The details are stunning: that unmistakable bill, black at the tip and boasting a vibrant orange base, truly pops under the sun.

The kind of flight that looks effortless, but is pure aerodynamic genius. 🕊️

Just spent the morning at Carlos Point watching these Royal Terns patrol the Gulf. Their long, narrow wings are held stiffly, maximizing lift against this insane blue sky. They sustain that soaring patrol until they drop—plunge-diving, headfirst, for small fish in the shallow waters.

It’s easy to just see the beautiful fishing trips, but here’s the part I find most fascinating: they’ll occasionally steal food from larger birds like pelicans. Kleptoparasitism. It changes how you view the whole ecosystem.
