Wanted to point out something cool with this Northern Pygmy Owl. Because its body is only sitting 4-5 inches on top of open branches, they’re fairly easy predators for bigger raptors- and these dark spots or ā€œfalse eyespotsā€ on the back of its head mimic eyeballs to give off a bit of a defensive look. As if it’s looking back at whatever is staring at the Pygmy.

Second picture is a huge crop of a phone pic of the owl about 100ft away to give a reference how small this thing was šŸ˜³šŸ¦‰

These were the cream of the crop the other night from finding this Pygmy Owl. I hadn’t moved from my spot originally shooting it, and it hopped lower and even closer to eye level from when we found it. They’re listed at ~7in fully extended from tip of the tail to head, but really they scrunch up into 4-5in ball šŸ˜‚

It was eyeing something really seriously on the ground below it, then moved up to another tree a bit further awayšŸ¦‰

After months and months of searching for this tiny raptor- I was finally able to get photos of a Northern Pygmy Owl. We rode up and down a road for miles and miles between 5-10mph scanning every single treetop and tree snag that this thing could’ve possibly perched on. On our way out, naturally, Breanna whacks me and points across my face directly to my left- and there it was!!!

Eye level and not even 50ft off the road with a snowy backdrop- it jumped between branches while eyeing a patch of ground below for food. I grabbed some shots as it hopped around then took off into some thicker trees. Here’s the first of 3 perches I was able to get some shots on. šŸ™‚

Here’s the rest of this weekend’s action at a local Bird Refuge. Gray Ghosts & Female Harriers, Meadowlarks, Kestrels, Eagles, and other hawks including Rough Leggeds were of no shortage!

Here’s some Short Eared Owl flight action from this weekend. Being able to capture this guy floating with the mountain backdrops was an amazing new experience for me, so I left most of these closer to uncropped to give the environments a bit more pop.

Last night was ridiculous- Breanna and I were on our final way out of a wildlife refuge not far from us, when the bobbing and weaving of this familiar face zoomed right across the road ahead of my truck.

This Short Eared Owl put on a show for us during golden hour, floating and diving and perching with some backdrops I honestly never imagined I’d have with an SEOW šŸ¦‰ More to come 😬

It was a fun sunrise with these small falcons- including a totally new species that's been evading me for months. A Prarie Falcon!

This one was jumping around & looking for food while the sun rose- same thing with the female kestrel at the end.

It was a nice surprise seeing these Sandhill Cranes a few feet off the road, I could shoot those from inside the truck!
