Aurora borealis?! At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen?

Yes.

May I see it?

No.

Seymour! The house is on fire!

No, mother. It’s just the Northern Lights.

Something Wicked This Way Went
After the Southwest Astronomy Festival back in September, and I trekked out into the dark night in search of dino tracks. This was kind of a bucket list shot for me, something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. We may have met a few sketchy characters in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, but we made it back in one piece and the results were worth it!

I had such a great time teaching a night sky photography workshop at this year’s Southwest Astronomy Festival. Thanks and for putting on a great festival. Shoutout to those who braved the “Dark Night in the Desert” with me to capture the beautiful dark skies of southern Utah.

I’m excited to be pairing up with and tomorrow (Sept. 8) to teach a workshop on photographing the night sky as part of the Southwest Astronomy Festival. If you’re in southern Utah and want to come check it out, head on over to the Public Lands Information Center at 345 E Riverside Dr. in St. George on Saturday at 7:00pm. We’ll have a discussion involving tips and tricks and then, hopefully, head out into the field to put our know-how to work. The workshop is free (though you might need to pay a few bucks if we go shoot in a fee area), so bring your camera and tripod and let’s go capture the beautiful southern Utah night sky together.

What an experience! Looking back at the photos make it seem all the more surreal. I tried to edit this photo to make it as true to real life as possible but it still seems so unbelievable; it was truly a unique experience. The countdown to 2024 is on!

I'm in a panorama kind of mood. I feel like I'm standing on some awesome balcony looking out into the world.
