Mountain Lion Caught Sleeping in Bald Eagle Live Nest Cam in Wyoming

WYOMING - Viewers tuning in to a popular Wyoming bald eagle live nest cam Tuesday morning were briefly confused after spotting what experts initially described as “a very large, tan eaglet.”

Officials later confirmed the animal calmly napping in the nest was in fact a full-grown mountain lion, which had apparently climbed into the nest overnight and fallen asleep without disturbing the resident eagles.

Wildlife officials say the eagles remained on a nearby branch for several hours, watching silently and “waiting for the situation to resolve itself.”

“There’s no indication of aggression,” one biologist said. “The lion appears to be using the nest strictly for rest. Honestly, it looks pretty comfortable.”

The mountain lion eventually woke up, stretched, and climbed back down the tree, leaving the nest intact. The eagles returned shortly after, inspected the nest, and resumed normal activity.

Officials say no action is being taken, noting that the incident is “just one of those Wyoming things” and reminding viewers that nature doesn’t always follow the rules.

🦅☀️🪹 EAGLE 101: NATURE’S CLOCK IS APPROACHING NESTING HOUR FOR MIDWEST EAGLES 🪹☀️🦅

Eagle watchers in Florida and along the Gulf Coast are already enjoying a nesting season that is full swing. For those of us in more northern latitudes, that time is quickly approaching, as the days grow slowly longer, and the sun gradually climbs higher in the sky.

It may be hard to imagine nesting season when the temperatures are Arctic cold as they are right now for many of us in the Midwest, but Bald Eagles take their cue from the sun (the photo trigger effect) not the air temperature. January is extremely early for actual Bald Eagle nesting in the Midwest, but not unheard of. More than likely, you may already be observing eagles hanging around nests and some may already be bringing back the occasional stick or two in the lead-up to nesting.

Now is a great time to start keeping a watchful eye on nest sites as activity slowly begins to ramp up. You may be treated to some fun sights like cartwheeling as Bald Eagles go through pair-bonding rituals and start readying their nests for eggs that are to come in the months ahead. Florida. Behaviors of these beloved eagles.

After falling from its nest on a power line tower, one Bald Eagle chick was brought to the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey's Raptor Trauma Clinic. It was too dangerous to return him to the nest, so the Center's team scheduled his release in an area with a large population of Bald Eagles that could act as a surrogate family as he learned to survive on his own. Now, telemetry data from this bird and others like it are providing a glimpse into the behaviors of these beloved eagles. Read more from Audubon Florida at the link in comments.

"There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud."
-Carl Sandburg

I grabbed the cameras and ventured out in the fog early Christmas morning. My destination was Perry lake in Jefferson County. The hope was to spot an eagle or two and other wildlife that might be visible through the fog. This was one of only two eagles I saw along the way. The gull flying overhead added a little bonus to this image.
I've been out on Christmas mornings in the past and each time it's like you have the world to yourself.

There is some truth in today's comical quote for me and possibly some of you as well. Today just might be a hippopotamus day for me.

I hope you all had a nice Christmas.

It's Friday!
