Abandoned | What Once Was

Some friends have some land in the plains of eastern Colorado. I was helping them plant a garden there. So on one of my trips down from the mountains, I would pass by this old house that was collapsing in on itself. There was nothing else there as far as the eye could see. The former home to somebody captivated my attention. I wondered, why build there? Why did they leave?

On one trip, there was a lone thunderstorm behind the house. For me, that scene captured the feeling I had been having about the house. It was the end of the cycle. That's when I knew I had to pull over and take the picture.

Interior designers often talk about sightlines. They're the natural path your eye travels when you enter or move through a room.

Most people never think about this consciously, but they feel it. Art placed directly in a sightline changes a room immediately.

Placement is as intentional as the work itself.

Where would you put Golden Aspens?

A lot of people hold off on collecting art because they rent and feel uncertain about committing to walls they do not own. But art does not belong to a wall. It belongs to you.

Renting is not a reason to live with bare walls. It is a reason to collect work that matters enough to keep moving (and growing) with you.

"Leadville Peace" and my other work are connected to the people who love them, not just the places they're displayed.

Arches National Park

Arches National Park is a stunning desert landscape located in Utah, USA, known for its impressive rock formations, including over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The arches in Arches National Park are primarily formed by a geological process called "frost wedging." This process occurs when water seeps into the small cracks and fissures in the sandstone rock and then freezes during the cold desert nights. When water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on the surrounding rock and causing it to break apart. Over time, this repeated freezing and thawing cycle gradually widens and deepens the cracks, eventually creating larger and larger openings that can form arches.

Pretty cool stuff! The park is full of features that make you think, "how on earth did that happen?"
