CSX EMD SD40 4671 idles in the Ridgeley Yard after finishing its yard work for the night. Meanwhile, Western Maryland EMD GP30 501 sits on the adjacent track with its cab lights on, but it’s crew elsewhere.

Stomping its way up the line, Great Smokey Mountain Railroad 1702, a 2-8-0 consolidation type steam engine, passes by the many areas where kudzu has taken over, just right of the frame.
Kudzu is an invasive species in the US, ironically brought over to stop soil erosion, it’s now know as the “Vine That Ate the South!”

The man himself.

Widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in modern steam preservation, Ed Dickens serves as Senior Manager of Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet Operations. Operating Union Pacific steam legends such as Northern 844 and Challenger 3985, Dickens also led the most ambitious steam restoration project of the modern era: the return of Big Boy 4014 to operation.
