Las Vegas EMS Community Mourns the Loss of Veteran Paramedic John D. “Big John” Osborn
The Las Vegas emergency medical services community is mourning the loss of one of its own.
John D. Osborn, affectionately known to family, friends, and coworkers as “Big John,” passed away unexpectedly at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy that spans nearly four decades in EMS and countless lives forever changed by his compassion, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to helping others.
Originally from Longmont, Colorado, Osborn devoted 37 years to emergency medical services, including 35 years serving Southern Nevada. Throughout his distinguished career, he worked as a Paramedic and Field Training Officer with Mercy Ambulance, Southwest Ambulance, and MedicWest Ambulance before concluding his career as Clinical Director at Community Ambulance.
For those who knew him, being a paramedic wasn’t simply a profession—it was his calling.
Over the course of his career, Big John responded to thousands of emergency calls, caring for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Whether comforting frightened families, mentoring a new medic, or leading by example, he quietly made a difference without ever seeking recognition. His calm demeanor, clinical knowledge, and genuine compassion earned the respect of everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.
Perhaps his greatest impact came through teaching.
Osborn mentored and educated hundreds of future healthcare professionals, helping shape the next generation of firefighter-paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and countless others entering the medical field. His family says he believed knowledge was meant to be shared and took great pride in helping others succeed. The ripple effect of his mentorship will continue for generations through every life those students go on to touch.
As one local paramedic put it, “If you didn’t learn from Big John, there’s a good chance your teacher did.” It’s a simple statement that perfectly captures the incredible reach of his influence throughout Southern Nevada’s EMS community.
Although he received numerous honors throughout his career, including the prestigious Star of Life Award, his family says recognition was never something he sought.
“He probably would have been embarrassed by all of this attention. He was one of the most humble people you could ever meet. He never sought the spotlight and always believed the work itself was what mattered most.”
Away from the ambulance, Big John was known for his larger-than-life personality, unforgettable sense of humor, and ability to make everyone around him feel welcome. But if you asked those closest to him what mattered most, they would tell you it was his family.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an incredibly proud grandpa. His grandchildren were the light of his life. Whenever he wasn’t working, he wanted to be with them—making memories, telling stories, laughing together, and simply enjoying every moment. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them.
His daughter says the values he instilled in his family are gifts they will carry forever. He taught them to love fiercely, laugh often even through life’s hardest moments, never give up on their dreams, work hard, treat everyone with kindness and respect, and always do the right thing—even when no one was watching.
John’s passing was sudden and unexpected, leaving his family not only grieving the loss of an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather, but also facing significant financial challenges. As the family’s sole provider, his wife is now navigating funeral expenses, household bills, and the uncertainty of rebuilding life without him.
