As a woman who is deeply involved in jiu-jitsu both on the mats and behind the scenes, I feel incredibly strongly about the safety of my sisters and brothers in the sport.
I have delt with sexual harassment in this career, especially in my earlier years, when *gross* individuals thought I was much younger than I was and therefore thought I would be easier prey. I've had athletes touch and grab me while I'm working, professors make *disgusting comments to me and so many other things I've shelfed away. There were a few times I absolutely considered quitting because none of this seemed worth it compared to what I was dealing with. At the time, when I did say something to event staff, they apologized but did *nothing. After that, I was scared my whole career would be derailed because, like many other young women starting out, I felt "who am I compared to this person and who is going to care."
I see many academies/organizations coming forward with statements of solidarity but solidarity IS NOT ENOUGH.
I truly believe that in order for there to be any difference in the current community, there *must be tangible change.
Change looks like the following:
1. Holding coaches, staff and team members accountable. Accountability means direct consequences for inappropriate actions (AND FOLLOWING THROUGH WITH THOSE CONSEQUENCES)
2. If you see something, say something.
3. Prioritize safety. Background checks for staff, in person interviews for long term team members, staff training etc. should be the *baseline
4. Understand that *anyone can be a victim (men, women and children) and cultivate an atmosphere which anyone feels safe to come forward
5. Be good people, and expect the same of anyone who interacts with your students, competitors etc.
Change only comes when moral and behavioral standards are SET and real consequences follow when those standard are not MET.
Love you guys so much and love my team at who have always treated me with respect and have held the highest standards for anyone who walks through the academy doors.
