Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Engagement

So honored to receive one of the Love Your Block grants for community engagement!!

Over the next few days, we will be highlighting the recipients of the Love Your Block COVID-19 Mini-Grant recipients and sharing some information about their projects.
Michelle Johnsen is a local photographer who has been taking photos of life during COVID-19, including Stoop Sessions where households are photographed in front of their homes. With the grant, she plans on transitioning to Front Window sessions, where families can be photographed inside their homes from their front windows, spreading joy and the reminder that we are not in this alone. Each family will receive a copy of their photo, and all the photos will be uploaded to an online gallery. She also plans on showing the images in a gallery with other COVID-19 photos once we are able to gather again.

Ten Artists Selected to create PSA Temporary Murals — Lancaster Public Art

Yeah!!! Congrats to some great friends and amazing artists!

Ten artists have been selected to convey critical messaging related to COVID-19. We had 73 submissions for the PSA Temporary Murals project! Not surprising, for the amount of creative people power in the Lancaster community. After much deliberation the selection committee narrowed the list down to

Like so many others, my business is at a stand still. It’s very scary to build something, work so hard to achieve it, then watch it crumble in an instant- indefinitely. Part of me is heartbroken. I miss my amazing job, but I want to be in the growth zone of this chart. So no, I won’t be asking others to risk their health to open non-essential businesses in PA. I won’t sign a petition against Wolf’s stay at home orders, I won’t join any protests against these orders (especially a protest filled with folks who refuse to wear masks or accept the severity of COVID), and I think anyone who does is selfish and grossly irresponsible. I will wear a mask and limit my time outside, I won’t gather with friends and family no matter how much I want to or need to. I’m staying right here at home for my safety and for yours. Thank you for doing the same even when it isn’t easy ❤️

We are putting out a call for entries for our upcoming online exhibition, 'Still Life' in Lancaster: Art in the Time of COVID-19, debuting during First Friday, May 1, 2020!

The 'Still Life' in Lancaster: Art in the Time of COVID-19 online exhibition will feature new works from local artists, reflecting on their experiences and observations over the last month or so.
We understand that our daily lives have been disrupted and perhaps as a result, your personal creativity has wavered or maybe you've found new inspiration. Art has the power to heal and allows us to tap into emotions and experiences in new ways, so we invite you to submit a piece that documents how you think and feel in this moment of our history, and what you've seen or heard since the COVID-19 pandemic has altered our way of life. This exhibition will be shared with our community online next month, and saved to help tell the story of stay at home days in the future.
We are looking for submissions varying from drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, and mixed media that speak to your creative experiences during COVID-19. Collectively, we will develop a digital exhibition to share with our community and record our experiences for generations to come. Submissions do not have to be a landscape or traditional "still life" - please feel free to send works of any subject, style, or medium!

There is no submission fee to participate. Please submit your work by April 26, 2020 to be included in the debut on First Friday, May 1.

For more information and submissions, please follow this link: https://forms.gle/woTqKXhQn8zWtjaaA

The United States Hot Air Balloon Team summer ride 2019!

“As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness -- just the pure air to breathe and the strength to breath it; just warmth and shelter and home folks; just plain food that gives us strength; the bright sunshine on a cold day; and a cool breeze when the day is warm.” -Laura Ingalls Wilder 🌿

It’s a time of uncertainty for many artist/entertainment and service industry workers, myself and my small business included. I’m still taking photography jobs especially outdoors with one or two people, but understandably folks are practicing social distancing and canceling events.

Please consider becoming a patron of the arts if you are able! You can gain access to patron-only photo galleries, use of my digital images for backdrops and stock photography, first dibs on themed mini sessions, discounted prints, and a patron-percentage off photo sessions. Thank you for considering or sharing! Love MJ ❤️

Booking is still open for end of Feb and March if anyone needs photos! Headshots, employee portraits, weddings, birthdays, events of any kind, products, real estate, lifestyle imagery, black light, projector, indoor, outdoor. The hustle is real and the call is coming from inside the house!!! Some of my business goals this year are: invest in upgraded equipment for editing, host a solo show, create an organized and efficient studio space, and seek collaboration with other artists. My solo show is Feb 21 (link in comments), the other goals are on their way!

From my scar project, GOLD/MINE🤩

The Japanese mend their broken pottery with golden joinery, epoxy dusted with powdered gold, emphasizing the beauty in imperfections. This practice is called kintsugi, and it signifies that we are shaped by our physically and emotionally scarring experiences.

OPEN CALL FOR STORIES

This year in place of the Vagina Monologues, I’ll be organizing stage readings of true stories on 2/14/2020 and 2/16/2020. Like the Monologues, I’m looking for stories by women, non-binary, and trans folks. They must be centered around the powerful themes of self-identity (race, gender, sexuality, etc), sex, relationships, and violence against women/female-bodied/nb/trans folks. I have performers willing to read your story! Please share this, and if you’d like to submit or have any questions, my email is [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you to help fill the room with diverse and impactful voices. You do not need to perform your own story if you submit. Submissions can/will remain anonymous to the two of us if you so desire. THANK YOU for passing this along to folks who might have an interest! Submission deadline January 1, 2020.

Hi Michelle, my name is Tim Burke you know who I am, I am the artist who created the Detroit industrial Gallery. You have 21 photographs of my art work at my gallery in Detroit, up on the Lancaster photo collective site. You have six photographs of my artwork that are in your Heidelberg project photo group it's up my green fence that surrounds my sculpture garden with all of the handprints on. My artwork is copywritten with United States copyright office. The public has legal right to photograph my artwork that is out in public, the public does not have license or legal right to sell the photographs of my copywritten artwork, you do not have an agreement with me, nor do you have A license from me releasing copyright to you, this is a letter for you to cease-and-desist any and all sales of images of my art work at my studio gallery in Detroit on Heidelberg Street, if you would like to purchase license to sell images of my artwork, That is something we can discuss in the future, as of now cease and desist. I am forwarding this letter to my attorney. This is not an issue to be taken lightly and I do not take it lightly, just as you don't with your copy written photographs, The photographs are yours the artwork is mine, this is not professional on your part at all. You are well aware of copyright issues, being in the profession that you're in and it gives a black eye to that profession when this type of thing happens. again i am open to discuss licensing agreement with you.
