As we approach the end of May and Cora's last week of preschool I am looking forward to summer vacations and bare feet and chillaxin' in the hammock and fresh local summer produce. I'm also feeling grateful for the opportunities I have to serve others through this photography passion of mine. Being able to stay at home with my kids while also pursuing my business has been a wonderful blessing. I'm so thankful for all of my wonderful clients and friends who hire me to take their photos! If I've taken your photos at some point, I would love it if you could leave me a review on Google. I'm trying to do better at showing up in web searches and every review helps!

Lancaster Portrait Photography: Spring Butterflies and Blooms Creative Portraits

It's a dreary gray Monday, how about feasting your eyes on some colorful blooms and butterflies?https://www.melissaenglephotography.com/blogposts/lancaster-portrait-photography-spring-butterflies-and-blooms-creative-portraits

This spring I got together with some creative photographer friends to do something magical and colorful. A little while back I came across these magnetic butterflies on Amazon and bought them thinking I could use them some day for a creative project. And thus we decided on a butterflies and blooms

“The most difficult part of birth is the first year afterwards. It is the year of travail – when the soul of a woman must birth the mother inside her. The emotional labour pains of becoming a mother are far greater than the physical pangs of birth; these are the growing surges of your heart as it pushes out selfishness and fear and makes room for sacrifice and love. It is a private and silent birth of the soul, but it is no less holy than the event of childbirth, perhaps it is even more sacred.” – Joy Kusek

One of my favorite quotes about motherhood that resonates with me still even though I’m 3.5 years in to being a mom. One of the best and toughest jobs there is!

It has been a rough week in the sleep department but I am still determined to get some things done. One of which is to finish up the editing on these orchard mini sessions! I am a 3 on the enneagram which explains why I get so frustrated at times when I feel like I cannot get anything accomplished. Several times I have questioned whether I am cut out for stay at home motherhood. But I think little by little I am learning to find balance and grace for myself in this season. This summer I am planning to hire a babysitter to come to our home a day a week which will help immensely. Now back to editing...

Lancaster Maternity Photography: Ryan and Andrea's Spring Maternity Session at Kauffman's Orchard

Most of the blossoms may be gone now but I'm still relishing in all the spring blooms and the killer sunset from Ryan and Andrea's session in the orchard. Any day now these two will be meeting their little babe! https://www.melissaenglephotography.com/blogposts/lancaster-maternity-photography-ryan-and-andreas-spring-maternity-session-at-kauffmans-orchard

I have known Ryan and Andrea for a few years now, since I photographed their wedding the fall after my daughter was born. I was so excited to hear that they were expecting their first baby in May. Andrea is a creative herself and is a very talented seamstress. I couldn’t believe it when she told m...

It was a beautiful Easter weekend for spending some time photographing sweet families among the flowers and blooming trees. Hoping the blooms will stick around at least another couple of weeks (sorry to those of you with allergies...) Can't believe it has already been a year since I took this little lady's newborn photos!

“Welcome, all hail to thee!
Welcome, young Spring!
Thy sun-ray is bright
On the butterfly’s wing.
Beauty shines forth
In the blossom-robed trees;
Perfume floats by
On the soft southern breeze.” -Eliza Cook, Spring poem

Last Friday I got together with two amazing lady photog creatives Emily Wilcox & Sirena Domino Hildebrand for a blooms and butterflies photo shoot. All of the colors just make my heart so happy! Also, you can get these really cool plastic butterflies on Amazon in a rainbow of colors and they are magnetic!

This past Saturday I got to do something I've never done before; I photographed a marriage proposal! It was a little nerve wracking (especially since I had never met either of them before and had to be a sneaky undercover photographer on the square) but so exciting at the same time. I may have even cried a little. Afterwards he arranged for a surprise champagne toast on the rooftop of Tellus360 with their families. Congratulations Steve and Lisa! Wishing you both all the best.

It's front porch weather! Our neighborhood comes to life when it gets warm outside; people are out chatting on their stoops and the cars ride by with their windows down and their beats booming. We have a crew of skateboarders that live across the street who the kids love to watch. It also means the ice cream truck starts making its rounds for the season (hopefully no Christmas music this year) And soon it will be my very favorite time of year when the cherry tree blooms in front of our house.

ALSO, tomorrow evening I'll be posting the link to sign up for spring mini sessions happening in the orchard on April 27th so keep an eye out for that b/c there are only 12 spots and they are bound to fill up fast!

“Remember this, for it is as true and true gets: Your body is not a lemon. You are not a machine. The Creator is not a careless mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose, and water buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.” These are the words of the wise Ina May Gaskin, author of my favorite book on natural childbirth “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth". Words we all need to hear sometimes. I had a lovely time photographing my beautiful friend Janet Tisinger in the golden light last evening as she awaits the arrival of baby boy #2, due next month.

One of my goals for 2019 is to photograph a birth. Just putting that out there to hold myself accountable to pursuing this goal and to anyone who is having a baby or knows someone who is having a baby who might consider letting me be that fly on the wall during such a momentous occasion. I do realize that having a birth photographed does not appeal to everyone and I completely understand! With my first I didn't know at all what labor and birth was going to be like and since I was already having my mom and doula in the room, in addition to my husband, I decided I did not want it documented. With my second I wanted to have it documented but my husband was not on board so I settled for a Fresh48 video/photo session after baby was born and had my mom snap a few photos of me in labor. Birth is empowering, intimate and one of the most incredible things a woman can do and I would be honored to witness and document it for someone out there.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.” -Rumi. About two years ago I took a photo of Cora under this very same blanket. I might have to turn this into a series to document her as she grows over the years. Like her mother she loves colors, especially rainbows like this rainbow blanket as we call it.

When I think of the Chronicles of Narnia , I definitely imagine the snowy winter scenes in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. When I first spoke with Lexi over the phone about what she envisioned for her senior session, I knew it was going to be good. She is interested in film and she loves Lord

Whenever people ask me how I got my start in photography I tell them glamour shots 1995. I was 12 years old and my mom took my sister and I to a studio where they did our hair and makeup and wrapped us in silk and feather boas and took our picture. I loved the experience so much that my mom gave me her SLR Canon film camera and I started having friends over for photo shoots. Today’s creative shoot with the lovely model and photographer Rachel Adshead took me back to my photographer beginnings and was food for my soul. Can’t wait to fully look through all we captured today but for now here’s one of my favorites from our vintage peacock flapper inspired shoot.

I appreciate it when my clients don't mind letting me try something a little different. We were at the end of this maternity mini session in Lancaster City and walking back to our cars when I noticed the light on this building and just had to do a few more shots with my new prisms. I love all the different elements going on, and the way you can see Victoria's belly shadow on the wall :) She's a photographer too so I'm sure she understands my obsession with light and shadow.

A new family of four. I’m almost a year in to being a mom of two and I’m still adjusting. I do think for me the biggest change was the first baby because everything is so new and there’s so much to learn. Also I went from having a job where I worked with people almost every day to being a stay at home mom. I was lonely. Suddenly life was no longer all about my needs, desires, career, schedule, etc. Adding a second babe has been hard but it’s a different kind of hard, in my experience. It has meant less chance for rest and more dividing my attention but at the same time a fuller heart, especially seeing the love grow between siblings. Now I’ve got a rhythm (sorta) though it’s always changing. Anyway, I currently long for the day when I can get a solid 5 hours of sleep in a row. I haven’t had that since before my son was born 10 months ago...😴

Spent some time outdoors today doing some light study while the kiddos enjoyed the warm air and blew bubbles. I decided to make these black and white because it adds a little more drama. There is something nostalgic about these images for me. Maybe it's remembering my own childhood and being barefoot in the wet grass.
