“Remember this, for it is as true and true gets: Your body is not a lemon. You are not a machine. The Creator is not a careless mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose, and water buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.” These are the words of the wise Ina May Gaskin, author of my favorite book on natural childbirth “Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth". Words we all need to hear sometimes. I had a lovely time photographing my beautiful friend Janet Tisinger in the golden light last evening as she awaits the arrival of baby boy #2, due next month.

One of my goals for 2019 is to photograph a birth. Just putting that out there to hold myself accountable to pursuing this goal and to anyone who is having a baby or knows someone who is having a baby who might consider letting me be that fly on the wall during such a momentous occasion. I do realize that having a birth photographed does not appeal to everyone and I completely understand! With my first I didn't know at all what labor and birth was going to be like and since I was already having my mom and doula in the room, in addition to my husband, I decided I did not want it documented. With my second I wanted to have it documented but my husband was not on board so I settled for a Fresh48 video/photo session after baby was born and had my mom snap a few photos of me in labor. Birth is empowering, intimate and one of the most incredible things a woman can do and I would be honored to witness and document it for someone out there.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.” -Rumi. About two years ago I took a photo of Cora under this very same blanket. I might have to turn this into a series to document her as she grows over the years. Like her mother she loves colors, especially rainbows like this rainbow blanket as we call it.

Lancaster Senior Photography: Lexi's Snowy Winter Narnia Senior Session at Tucquan Glen

Just blogged this wintery Narnia inspired senior session in time for our winter snow storm today!

When I think of the Chronicles of Narnia , I definitely imagine the snowy winter scenes in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. When I first spoke with Lexi over the phone about what she envisioned for her senior session, I knew it was going to be good. She is interested in film and she loves Lord

Whenever people ask me how I got my start in photography I tell them glamour shots 1995. I was 12 years old and my mom took my sister and I to a studio where they did our hair and makeup and wrapped us in silk and feather boas and took our picture. I loved the experience so much that my mom gave me her SLR Canon film camera and I started having friends over for photo shoots. Today’s creative shoot with the lovely model and photographer Rachel Adshead took me back to my photographer beginnings and was food for my soul. Can’t wait to fully look through all we captured today but for now here’s one of my favorites from our vintage peacock flapper inspired shoot.

I appreciate it when my clients don't mind letting me try something a little different. We were at the end of this maternity mini session in Lancaster City and walking back to our cars when I noticed the light on this building and just had to do a few more shots with my new prisms. I love all the different elements going on, and the way you can see Victoria's belly shadow on the wall :) She's a photographer too so I'm sure she understands my obsession with light and shadow.

A new family of four. I’m almost a year in to being a mom of two and I’m still adjusting. I do think for me the biggest change was the first baby because everything is so new and there’s so much to learn. Also I went from having a job where I worked with people almost every day to being a stay at home mom. I was lonely. Suddenly life was no longer all about my needs, desires, career, schedule, etc. Adding a second babe has been hard but it’s a different kind of hard, in my experience. It has meant less chance for rest and more dividing my attention but at the same time a fuller heart, especially seeing the love grow between siblings. Now I’ve got a rhythm (sorta) though it’s always changing. Anyway, I currently long for the day when I can get a solid 5 hours of sleep in a row. I haven’t had that since before my son was born 10 months ago...😴

Spent some time outdoors today doing some light study while the kiddos enjoyed the warm air and blew bubbles. I decided to make these black and white because it adds a little more drama. There is something nostalgic about these images for me. Maybe it's remembering my own childhood and being barefoot in the wet grass.

I adore meeting first time parents for maternity photography sessions because I get to ask them all about their plans for their soon-to-arrive little one. “Are you finding out the gender? What does the nursery look like? Where are you giving birth?”, etc. etc. Yes, I admit I’m a little nosy an...

Yesterday I photographed a unique winter senior session. Lexi really loves Lord of the Rings and Narnia so she wanted to be in the forest and even brought her Narnian sword and a bow and arrow along. I knew Tucquan Glen would be the perfect setting and it turned out to be a beautiful winter day for a hike in the forest. I'm excited to share more of these!

First photo session of 2019 is in the books and I’m feeling excited for what is in store this year as I think about my goals. I think intentional is going to be one of my words of the year for my business. I want to be more intentional about connecting with my clients and preparing them for the photo shoot experience (especially first time clients). This means creating a “Welcome” guide is one of my goals. Basically a nicely designed printable PDF that talks about what to wear, how to prepare, when to expect photos, etc. along with some photos to show my work/style. If any fellow photogs have pointers on where to begin with something like this, I’d love to have your input and advice! Side note: I hope I get to shoot more maternity sessions in 2019!

Finishing up the edits on my last photo shoot of 2018 today with the lovely Claire! Can't decide if I like this image of her in color or black and white better. Opinions? I love how her eyes pop with the green moss in color but I also love how the black and white shows the shape and texture.

Also, side note, she reminds me a bit of a young Demelza from the TV show Poldark (my latest obsession). Anyone watch it?

Finally blogged the mermaid magic! (Wanted to post it yesterday but long story short I ended up spending most of the day in the ER...) Happy New Year!

And here she is, my favorite personal project of 2018, Mermaid Dreams. This creative jewel toned mermaid fantasy shoot has been brewing in my mind for quite a while. Seeing it all come together despite the odds is more than a dream come true for me. It is one thing to have an idea in your mind and i

Sharing Friday favorites on the blog from our Christmas mini session’s for a cause at Frey's Greenhouse. In total we raised $685 for the Lancaster Neighbor Fund from our two rounds of mini sessions! #photographythatgives

A big part of the Christmas season for me is about giving (after all gifts are my top love language) and I have always wanted my business to give back in some way. A few years back, during the Syrian refugee crisis, a friend had the idea of getting photographers to offer their services while donatin

"For unto us a child is born". Merry Christmas from our family to yours! My husband had the idea for our Christmas card this year and I used my lousy Photoshop skills to make it happen. Believe it or not, we journeyed all the way to Morocco for the background (5 years ago). Many blessings to you this Christmas and may you be surrounded by those you love.

Thankful for lovely friendtogs like Becky of Rebecca Shivers Photography who are willing to come and do a little photo swap play date last minute the week before Christmas. Becky is expecting baby #2 in March (due the day before my birthday!) It works out well that we are both petite and wear the same size since I was able to lend her some of my maternity wear, including this dress (which I was wearing a year ago at this time while pregnant with Nolan, also born in March). This was my first time photographing at one of the beautiful The Chris & Claude Co. homes, which they so kindly open up for creatives to come and do their thing.

Mermaid dreams on this rainy misty morning. One of my biggest accomplishments this year was pulling off this mermaid dreams styled shoot. The odds were against us in that I had thrown my back out the week or so before, we had rain and flooding in the days before the shoot, and our boat option fell through last minute; however somehow it all came together beautifully and was beyond my wildest dreams.Monsters and Lace knocked it out of the park with their modeling skills. Stay tuned for more on the blog, coming soon.

Took my kiddos out for a little photo shoot on our front porch yesterday. I love this pic because they both have their tongues out, as they often do. Nolan just wanted to suck on the battery pack to the fairy lights and Cora wanted to show off her kitty (it's one of those rice warmers that you heat up in the microwave, thank you Ten Thousand Villages). When I hurt my back earlier this fall, Cora was always saying, "I'll heat up the warm kitty for your back" and she still does to this day even though thankfully my back pain is mostly gone.

Lancaster Family Photography: A Fall Family Session at Long's Park

A new blog post is up! This is one of our favorite parks to go to as a family, and where Cora learned to say her first word. Hint: starts with a "d" and it's not "dada". Read on to find out what it is and see some colorful fun photos from the Franz family.

I’ve been photographing the Franz family for a few years now and this fall session at Long’s Park is probably my favorite session with them so far. In all my years of doing portrait photography, I have rarely used Long’s Park as a location. I’m not sure why that is because it’s a beautiful...

So I'm starting a new thing I'll call Friday Favorites. I've had so many awesome sessions this fall that I want to share and other than my blog and Instagram I don't get the opportunity to really share my favorites all at once. So here are some favorites from the Ives family session at Long's Park. Their little girl is one of the happiest kids I've photographed. And it was fun that they brought their dog along too!

A little different than my usual gig but I’m sharing because I love dance and I want to photograph more of it. I have very fond memories from swing dancing and being a part of Acclamation Dance Ministry/Footprintz Hip Hop Team when I was a student at Messiah College. Last night I photographed the dress rehearsal for the fall dance concert at Franklin & Marshall College. You can see the show this weekend if you're in town!

Also, happy small business Saturday! I am blessed to have the support of so many wonderful people who have hired me to take their photos this year. Word of mouth has been the best way to grow my business and I appreciate all of your referrals!
