We decided to join a CSA this year to support local agriculture and I am so glad we did! Even though we grow some of our own fruit and veggies in our city backyard it's nice to have a weekly supply of fresh local produce. And one of the bonuses of our CSA through Homefields Incorporated is pick-your-own flowers! Cora and I look forward to creating our bouquet each week. Can you spot the monarch in this photo?

Weekend vibes! Just want to say again if I haven't said it before: Parents, get in the frame with your kids. They will appreciate looking back on those photos someday. And if anything they'll get a good laugh remembering your weird clothing and hairstyle that are SO 2020. 😆

Friday favorites from the wildflower field mini sessions! I know I have been oversharing from this field but it's such a happy place I can't help it!

Speaking of mini sessions, I am planning to hold my annual fall mini sessions for a cause in October, likely on the 17th or 24th. These will be by donation with a portion of every donation benefiting a local non-profit organization. If you are interested, keep an eye out for details because these always fill up fast.

Sisters 🥰 These two are very precious to me because they are my nieces! We finally got to see them for the first time this year when we celebrated Penelope's 7th birthday a few weeks ago (and she lost her front tooth the day of the celebration, right after we took these photos 😄).

The hot weekend is coming to an end and we are swinging into a new week. What are you most looking forward to this week? For me, I think I am most excited about a small outdoor gathering of girl friends. I am savoring every moment of quality friend time that I can get. In fact, quality time is probably my second highest love language (after gifts).

Friday favorites! Love these images of this beautiful growing family in the summer’s golden glow at the wildflower field. They travelled all the way from New York for these photos (kind of 😉 they also have good friends in the area they came to visit) This evening was quite the sweaty humid affair but it was all worth it!

Anyone else have plans for a beach trip down south this summer? We are headed to Edisto Island Beach, SC in August and I'm curious what things are like down south as far as mask wearing, social distancing, businesses that are open/closed and whatnot. I've been told that no one is wearing masks...(not here to start a debate, just curious what the vibe is like).

I hope everyone has a fabulous holiday weekend! I just finished sending out galleries to everyone who participated in the wildflower mini sessions. I'm so thankful we could finally fit in these sessions that were rescheduled from March. I know we aren't sure what the fall holds for us, but I do hope to do my annual mini sessions for a cause this year if covid allows. I'm thankful that I have been able to photograph so many faces this summer.

Stay cool and stay safe everyone!

I don't get to take many engagement photos these days since the weddings I shoot are few and far between, but it was an honor to capture these for Marisa and Steve whose small intimate wedding I will be photographing this fall. Marisa is a stellar artist and a photographer herself. For their engagement session we wandered around Lancaster City to some of their favorite places and even got a few with their puppy around their neighborhood.

One of my best friends is having a baby in December and I could not be more happy for her! She and her husband Dani got married this March just in the nick of time as the world was going into covid quarantine. Their New Zealand honeymoon may have been cancelled but a quarantine honeymoon means they are getting a quarantini baby! Drea and Dani, 2020 is your year! Can't wait to squeeze your tiny dimpled hairy babe (which lets be honest I probably won't get to hold him/her until spring/summer of 2021 with the way things are looking 😢)

Friday favorites: I call these "Quarantine Self Portraits" (long & personal post warning!) I've been reflecting on our last 3 months of quarantine and all the various feelings and emotions that have been circulating within me. It felt surreal at first and I, like many other moms with young kids, got creative with things around the house. We finger painted on the windows and did chalk art and made rainbows with our food, baked with yeast and built pillow forts. I think giving up social media for lent was a good thing for me because reading all the news only fed my anxiety. But then eventually the creative energy started to wear off and I just became weary. Grieving the temporary closure of my business, grieving the loss of in person friendships and playdates and babysitters. Feeling frustrated by the constantly changing virus news about what we were and were not supposed to be doing and all the related political banter and divisiveness on FB. Feeling alone and realizing that I've been feeling alone in motherhood since before quarantine began. Adjusting to our "new normal" has been hard.

At my lowest point one morning after being frustrated with my kids, I just left and went for a scream drive in the car (husband was working from home). I yelled at God and asked why I couldn't hear him anymore and why this was so hard. I drove to one of our new secret hiking trails and parked and just sat in my tears for a while. Then these 2 wild turkeys came scuttling up the path, one several meters behind the other. It appeared like they were practicing social distancing. I kind of felt like a lost turkey in the woods. I had to remind myself that it's ok to not be ok. I don't normally share my struggles with others but this time of quarantine has helped/forced me to reach out and share and ask for help. So in a sense, quarantine has helped me to become more vulnerable instead of bottling or masking my emotions.

A wise friend compared this time we are living in to labor and birth. As the labor goes on, we worry about how much longer we can endure the pain and with no clear end in sight, we just want to give up. But if we take it one day (contraction) at a time, it all seems much more bearable. And so as hard as it is for me, someone who thrives on things to look forward to, I have been trying to live more in the present.

A month or two ago I saw a series of beautiful windblown dancerly self portraits taken by another photographer Megan Scott Photography and they inspired these. I wish I had a photo of my set-up because it was quite funky. These were taken in my daughter's room, with the camera sitting on top of a pouf on top of a stool on top of a recliner and my kids took turns clicking the shutter while I danced around with this scarf. :-p I think they represent the struggle and the beauty this time of quarantine has been for me.

And if you made it to the end of this post, thanks for listening :)

Friends, I have 2 openings for summer mini sessions this Saturday morning, June 20th, in the wildflowers. These are likely the only mini sessions I will offer this summer (and perhaps for 2020 depending on how fall looks with the covid situation). If you want in, the time is now! These are short 15 minute sessions. Online gallery of images included, cost is $125.

P.S. I will still be offering my regular half hour mini sessions this summer but these sessions are the most budget friendly I offer.

Hope you were able to enjoy the beautiful weekend! We spent a couple days at the beach last week and it was so refreshing (except for the teething toddler who did not want to sleep). It was our first family vacation with just the 4 of us and the first time we've taken a trip out of state this year (and since covid quarantine). It was just great to be somewhere other than inside our house! Does anyone else have a favorite beach or vacation spot to recommend within 3 hours of Lancaster? We are always looking for new places to explore!

“It's not our job to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. It's our job to raise children who will make the world a little less cruel and heartless.”-L.R. Knost

I think often about the world our children are growing up in. As a parent I have concerns. Concerns about our planet, global warming, pandemics, political divisions, systemic racism. Sometimes it is overwhelming to think about and all I want to do is protect and shelter my children from it all. But what I must come to realize is that ultimately their core values in childhood will be formed by the habits and actions they experience in our home. Which means we as parents have a big job to do and the choices we make for our families and our children will make an impact on the adults they become. Ahh! It's a big responsibility but we will do our best, for our kids and their future.

I am never good with words or writing deep thought-provoking captions. I want to please others, I don’t want to rock the boat, I want everyone to like me. But I feel I must speak out against the hate and injustice we have been seeing in our country against our black and brown friends. Racism is not a new issue, and I am guilty of living oblivious to what is happening because “it doesn’t affect me and I have my own problems to worry about”. I admit my white privilege and confess my blindness. I will try to be better by listening and educating myself and most importantly my children in hopes that we will see change in the future generation because all lives can’t matter until #blacklivesmatter.

Spring of 2020 is one that will go down in the history books because of the coronavirus/covid19. For most of the world, the virus has changed life as we know it and turned everything upside down. Friday favorites! We borrowed some baby chicks for a week and decided to have a little tea party with them in our backyard one evening. I had planned to use the beautiful macrame backdrop for my spring mini sessions (which were of course cancelled) so I had to use it for a photo shoot before I return it to its owners. I did two different "looks" for the photos, one with lace and fancy china, and another colorful and vintage. This is the first look and I'll share the other photos next week and you can decide which one you like better. Can you guess how many times they pooped on the table during the tea party?

Thanks to Kimberly Garrett Martin for letting us babysit your peeps and to Andrea Miller Rodriguez for lending me your tea sets and macrame backdrop!

My Story

I’m Melissa, a color happy gal and a lover of impromptu dance parties and anything that involves bacon and avocado. Folks who know me well would describe me as a child at heart who’s got some killer party planning skills and an obsession with unicorns and mermaids. I’m the photographer who will do one-handed cartwheels to get your kids to smile if the need arises (yes, I took gymnastics as a kid).

I photograph people who are looking for someone to capture the joy and chaos of their everyday lives and important milestones with a unique eye for detail, color and genuine emotion. With a background in studio art and photojournalism, I strive to tell stories with my photography using an approach that is relaxed, natural and fun.

I am fluent in Spanish and my previous work with non-profit organization Mennonite Central Committee has taken me to 26 countries around the world. I am based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with with more than 15 years of professional photography experience in photojournalism, portraits, weddings, travel and events. If you're looking for a fun, creative and affordable family, portrait or lifestyle photographer, I encourage you to be in touch! *All sessions include a password protected online gallery to share with family and friends.
