Lancaster Family Photography: A Sun Soaked Winter Family Session at Overlook Park — Melissa Engle Photography

New on the blog! This winter family session happened on one of the rare sunlit Saturdays we had this February.

https://www.melissaenglephotography.com/blogposts/lancaster-family-photography-a-sun-soaked-winter-family-session-at-overlook-park

After many days of gray dreary weather, the sun decided to show its face for this winter family photo session in Overlook Park. This winter has been one of the wettest and warmest that we have had in a long time. I will be honest, I’m not a huge fan of snow but there is something beautiful about t...

It isn't every day that I get to combine two of my passions, but sometimes it happens. I met Marie many years ago when we were both working for the same non-profit in Lancaster. Her smile and enthusiasm are contagious. She is an incredible dancer and opened a barre & pilates fitness studio in downtown Lancaster in 2014 (we were both pregnant with our first babies at the time) and we collaborated on a dance photography exhibit for her studio. Fast forward a few years and she now has a studio in Lititz as well and has reopened her downtown location Move It Studio right next to The Lancaster Central Market. I got to photograph her in the new space and have started taking some of the barre classes there (they're the perfect blend of toning and cardio). If you haven't read her "Move It Manifesto" yet, you should! It will make you want to be a part of the goodness happening in her studio as she reflects on body image, mom life and the why behind her business:

Spent my Saturday morning with this little lady. I love hearing tidbits of birth stories while I'm doing newborn sessions. When I was photographing baby Isla's feet, her dad said that one of the first things her mom said when she came out was, "Look, she has her Daddy's feet".

I'm considering doing my first ever indoor studio mini sessions in Lancaster in March and I'm putting out feelers to see if there is interest. This would be in a beautiful studio space with lots of window light, and some sort of colorful floral/spring/greens backdrop. I'm also considering having live bunnies...Can you imagine the cuteness overload of babies and bunnies?!

Please comment below or like this photo if you are even slightly interested. Or if you'd rather wait until warmer weather and do outdoor mini sessions, that's fine too!

2020 marks 10 years since I officially started my photography business. I was 26 and just returned from a year living abroad in Nicaragua. I got a part time job for a local nonprofit in Lancaster and launched my business on the side. When my daughter was born 6 years later I knew I wanted to continue my business while being a stay at home mom so I left my part time job and started to get more serious about actually making an income from my photography. Here we are 4 years later and I can say that I feel proud of what I’ve accomplished. I still wouldn’t consider myself a full time photographer but I can at least use what I earn to cover our groceries and preschool expenses (and save a little too). My goal for this year is to keep serving growing families and pursue some creative passion projects (unicorns perhaps?) And of course I will continue documenting the magic in the everyday and keeping it lighthearted with a touch of whimsy and lots of color. Thanks to my husband for taking these photos in my favorite ugly Christmas sweater in front of our awesome neighborhood mural.

As a new addition to Cora's bedtime routine, she has been asking to hear stories from when I was a little girl (or when Daddy was a little boy). I started doing this because I have such fond memories of my mom (as well as my aunt and grandmothers) telling me stories from their childhood when they would tuck me in to bed. A lot of my stories revolve around pets and creatures we had growing up. I used to love to collect butterflies and told Cora how I would catch them and then kill them with a slow death by putting them in a jar with a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover. I would then carefully open their wings and pin them into a special display box with a label stating what kind of butterfly it was. Cora was fascinated by this story and wanted to see my collection. When I asked my mom about it, she said it is actually on display in the museum at Wilson College (where my dad is a biology professor)!

This photo was inspired by my childhood butterfly collection and was all done in camera as a double exposure (no Photoshop). We found this neat magnetic butterflies on Amazon and they actually stick to our magnetic paint!

Who would have thought I'd get to to a mermaid maternity session during the winter time? There are mermaids among us every day, you just have to learn to see them 😄 As Hayley was twirling I caught her at the perfect angle where it looks like she has a mermaid tail.

Beginning and ending 2019 with an image from a creative shoot in February involving my favorite color in the world (turquoise), peacock feathers and a flapper costume. We'll be attending a 1920's NYE party this evening (like many others I presume) and this will be my attire. Thanks to the lovely Rachel Adshead for modeling and Realm And Reason Shop for letting us use your space.

Wishing you blessings for A Whole New Year! I don't know how we will top this year's Christmas card, flying on a magical carpet over our beloved Lancaster City. As you may have guessed, we are big Aladdin fans over here and it has been our most-listened-to soundtrack of 2019. Thanks to my pal Emily Wilcox for bringing my vision to life!

All that glitters is not gold. Sometimes it’s tinsel and fairy lights 😆 This little girl has a heart of gold. The other day Dave and I were cutting vegetables in the kitchen together and she came in and said “Aww you look so cute doing that together, I’m gonna go get my camera and take a picture”. Proud mom moment right there.

Friday favorites with the Thompson family! These three could be on a Hallmark card “Wishing you a Christmas filled with light, love and laughter”. Lindsay, the most beautiful redhead, is a childhood friend of mine and used to model for my photo shoots way back when we were teenagers. We rarely see each other anymore but she decided to have me do their family photos this year when they were in Lancaster. I realized the last time I photographed them was when their son was just a year old and it was also a super cold and windy day like the day we took these photos. But he was all smiles and did not complain one bit!

I love it when I leave a family photo session where I can’t wait to get home and go through the photos. This was one of those sessions. Just popping by to say that I won't be offering mini sessions at Frey's Greenhouse this December (for those who have been asking) and my weekends are booked through the end of the year. It has been a crazy busy fall and I am blessed to have photographed so many new and old faces this season. Wishing you all a merry month of Christmassy gatherings and things!

It's small business Saturday and as you know, when you hire me as your photographer you are helping to support my family and this passion of mine. As a favor, I'd love it if you could leave me review on Google if you have been a recipient of my photography services. It has been really helpful in helping new clients to find me and every review helps!

It only takes a few seconds and it would mean so much!

Never under estimate the power of an image. Our family photos from this year will always hold a deeper meaning for me because, though I did not know it at the time they were taken, I was several weeks pregnant with with what would have been our third little Hessling.

In addition to feeling grateful for supportive and loving family and friends this year, I am thankful for my body (though tired and weary) and its ability to nurture a child and grow a new life at the same time. It has the strength to endure more than I ever thought possible.

Thank you to Emily Grace Photography for capturing us so beautifully!

I've shared this before but I'll share it again, I think most would agree that one of the best things about living in Lancaster City is The Lancaster Central Market. I go there weekly with my kids and I can’t even say how many times I come home with free produce or seconds or my kids get offered a free banana snack, or I get a beautiful bouquet of local flowers for $6. Nothing beats having relationships with the vendors and fresh local produce from a market we can walk to! If you go to market, what is your favorite stand? Mine is Thomas' Produce and Wendy Jo's is a close second (we always get the animal cookie of the day).

I enjoy doing photo sessions in the city just as much as out in the country and was excited that the Fair family wanted to do their photos around town.

I hope this comes across loud and clear but I just want to say that I love my job. Interacting with people and photographing a tiny window into their lives brings me joy. The other day my grandma said she can't imagine how I do so much with my photography in addition to the full time job of raising kids and my response was, "well, it helps that I am passionate about what I do!" Of course there are parts of it that feel like work and can be a headache (all the editing and all the numbers involved with running a business) but overall it is a positive addition to my life. I have been thoroughly enjoying all of my fall sessions this year and I'm sad that the leaves are coming to an end. Kira and Jordan are my neighbors and friends and their little girl Makenna is the sweetest!

My Story

I’m Melissa, a color happy gal and a lover of impromptu dance parties and anything that involves bacon and avocado. Folks who know me well would describe me as a child at heart who’s got some killer party planning skills and an obsession with unicorns and mermaids. I’m the photographer who will do one-handed cartwheels to get your kids to smile if the need arises (yes, I took gymnastics as a kid).

I photograph people who are looking for someone to capture the joy and chaos of their everyday lives and important milestones with a unique eye for detail, color and genuine emotion. With a background in studio art and photojournalism, I strive to tell stories with my photography using an approach that is relaxed, natural and fun.

I am fluent in Spanish and my previous work with non-profit organization Mennonite Central Committee has taken me to 26 countries around the world. I am based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with with more than 15 years of professional photography experience in photojournalism, portraits, weddings, travel and events. If you're looking for a fun, creative and affordable family, portrait or lifestyle photographer, I encourage you to be in touch! *All sessions include a password protected online gallery to share with family and friends.
