Who says missing picture day has to be a bad thing? 🥎

This little softball star missed her team photos while on vacation, so we met up at the field to take some of our own. And if you ask me, I think she got the better deal.

The light was gorgeous, we had so much fun, and we got to capture a little piece of something she loves.

And that's what I want you to remember when planning your own photos.

You don't have to pick a pretty field just because that's where everyone else takes their family pictures. Your photos can be so much more personal than that.

Maybe it's your favorite park, the ice cream shop you visit every summer, your own backyard, or an activity your kids can't get enough of right now.

The location doesn't have to be picture-perfect. It just has to mean something to you.

Because years from now, you won't just remember what everyone looked like. You'll remember what this season of life *felt* like. ❤️

When was the last time you had a photo with your WHOLE family?

And I don't just mean your spouse and kids. I'm talking grandparents, siblings, cousins, the whole crew!

Extended family sessions are one of my favorite things to photograph because they're basically 5 family sessions rolled into one. 🙌

Of course, we get that big group photo for Grandma's wall. But we also get the individual families, grandparents with their grandkids, siblings together again, couples, cousins being goofy, and all those little interactions in between.

This crew was one of the largest groups I've photographed, and we had SO much fun!

Here's your reminder that you don't have to wait for a wedding or a major milestone to get everyone together for photos. And if you're already planning a family gathering, that's the perfect opportunity to make it happen.

Because someday, those photos of everyone together are going to mean even more than they do today. 💛

The BIG 4! 🌊💙 My boy is officially a real big kid now. 🥹

My boy with the spirit of the sea. Deep and wide, wild and wonderful, and full of so much life. You've got a whole ocean of love in that little heart of yours, and I hope you never lose an ounce of it.

Four years of loving you, watching you grow, and getting to discover more of the beautiful little person you're becoming. What a gift it is to be your mama.

And just like you always tell me, "I love you to the bottom of the ocean, forever forever forever."

Okay, but can we talk about how much can happen in just 15 minutes?! 🍂😍

I know what you're thinking… Is that really enough time to get good family photos?

And I get it! Between getting everyone dressed, out the door, and actually looking at the camera, 15 minutes sounds like approximately 30 seconds. 😂

But here's the thing: we don't need an hour to capture the good stuff.

A few snuggles. Some genuine laughs. A little movement. That one photo where everyone is actually looking at the camera (yes, we'll try for that one too 😉).

This session feels especially meaningful to share because October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month.

Claire has Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome can cause the loss of speech, hand function and gross motor skills, as well as seizures. But one thing her mom especially wants people to understand is this: Claire can learn and comprehend, even when she can’t communicate in the ways most of us do.

And if you’ve ever seen Claire, you already know there is SO much more to this kid than a diagnosis.

She’s joyful. She’s adventurous. She tries new things. She has one heck of a smile and an amazing laugh. And she is very, very loved.

There’s also so much hope surrounding Rett research right now. Gene therapy trials are showing promising results, and research continues toward finding a cure.

As a photographer, I talk a lot about preserving your family exactly as you are in this season. The messy parts. The joyful parts. The things you never expected your story to hold.

Getting to preserve a little piece of this family’s story again this year is something I don’t take for granted.

Ten years ago, it was the two of them.

Now, almost a decade of marriage later, this is what their love looks like.

I absolutely loved getting to photograph this family as they get ready to celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary. Because anniversaries don’t always have to mean getting dressed up and taking photos of just the two of you.

Sometimes the sweetest way to celebrate is to document everything those years have built.

The kids. The laughs. The chaos. The way everyone fits together right now.

And despite the gray skies trying their best to be dramatic that day, we had such a sweet session.

Happy almost 10 years to these two—and to the beautiful family that grew from their love.

Bringing these back because 1. they’re still ridiculously cool 🔥 and 2. they’re a perfect reminder that your photos should feel like you.

Your session doesn’t have to be just standing in a pretty field smiling at me.

Bring the cool car. Plan a picnic. Get ice cream. Bring the dog. Do something your family actually loves doing together.

Sometimes adding an activity, a favorite place, or something that means a lot to you is exactly what makes a session feel less like “family pictures” and more like your family.
