I forgot about one of the best decision-making frameworks I've ever learned. Then James Clear showed up on my feed and reminded me.

He calls it "Hats, Haircuts, and Tattoos."
Hats are easy. Put one on, take it off. No real consequence. Just try it.
Haircuts are reversible, but slowly. You can grow it back, but you'll live with the choice for a while.
Tattoos are forever. Slow down. Sleep on it. Get input.

The trap I fall into is treating hat decisions like tattoos. I'll deliberate for a week on something I could've just tried in an hour. And then I'll snap-decide on something that actually deserved the deliberation.

Most shop owners struggle to find good people. They're missing something obvious.
Your best recruiting tool is already happening inside your building every single day.
Pull out a camera. Ask your guys what boots they swear by, or what they actually like about working there. When you (the owner) are the one asking, candidates notice.

A couple of weeks ago I bounced around to different businesses in Lancaster County offering my services for a FREE 30 second video. Not to be annoying, not to get something from them, just to introduce myself and share my talent with them.

One business that was gracious enough to let me film was J&E Grill Manufacturing. These guys build all sorts of equestrian products that are top notch quality and look amazing. If you're in the equestrian space you can check them out here at their website: https://www.horsebarnsupplies.com/

This project was filmed in about 30 minutes with guidance from their marketing director and was originally formatted to be horizontal for their website. We wanted to do what we could in that limited time to show the flow of a product through their facility. How something moves from their office, to the different areas on the shop floor, and finally the shipping bay for installation at a later date.

A few weeks ago I bounced around Lancaster County to different blue collar businesses offering my services for a FREE quick 30 second video. Not to get something from them, not to be annoying, just to introduce myself and share my talent with them.

One of the businesses I stopped at was Diamond Millwork, and they were gracious enough to let me film in their shop. I talked to the owner to learn a little about what is most important to their business, and then went about filming. The end result was an originally horizontal version of what you see here.

Diamond Millwork really doesn't have content to show their craftsmanship or services that they provide. This little banner video is just the tip of the iceberg of what we could do for them to help them reach a wider market and grow.
