This is their normal.
What if our children came home with the abuse they endure at school written on their skin? I imagine things would begin to change. Most parents would be outraged, they would stand up and demand change. Unfortunately this is not the case. Not all abuse is visible. Not all abuse is reported. Often, when it is reported, it is swept under the rug (especially when the bully is related to a "somebody"). Victims are punished when they do defend themselves, by administration and fellow students alike. Children are feeling so helpless and desperate that they are taking their own lives because they see no way out. When is ENOUGH enough?!
Talk to your children. Be involved. Raise them to be kind. Raise them to intervene. Take them seriously when they are talking about little things, because often, the big things are hidden in there with the little things. If your child comes to you about another child being bullied or abused, SAY SOMETHING, even if it isn't happening to your child. You could save a life. We have to do better. We have to pay more attention. We have to start DEMANDING accountability from school officials who let these things slide.
