One should always bring a teacher / coach to assist at a photoshoot.

Fun fact: I’ve known Coach Brown since we were something like 9 years old. In high school, we were self-proclaimed “twins” and often called by each other’s names in spite of our 8” high difference. AND, this is not the first time she assisted me with photos as she was by my side calming my nerves and throwing down some coaching energy at the first wedding I photographed many years ago. I’d take her anywhere.

I seldom shoot with a zoom lens as I am and always will be an up-close-and-personal photographer. So when I am photographing larger groups I can never resist the urge to run in and “small group” the moment. It’s weird and awkward and delivers some of the most sparkly, unposed posed moments. And, the secret reason I do it? Afterwards everyone is just a little more themselves.

That’s what I’m here for.

Fun fact: Zoe competed for Miss Wisconsin a few years back. As I watched the talent competition, other singers got up and did their thing - quite well even, but then Zoe got on stage. There was an electricity, an intangible that my non-musical brain can’t quite pinpoint except to feel the…“OH, this.”

Clearly the judges agreed as she swept the talent awards.

I’m always tempted to tell people “I photograph love stories.” Confusion aside, I believe it. Zoe has loved to sing as long as I can remember. She has brought me to tears on more than one occasion by simply sharing her voice.

What an honor to work with Zoe to help her share this gift of music with the world (or, as the case may be for now anyway - the Driftless region of Wisconsin) as she officially launches Zoe Olivia Music (.com).

I didn’t grow up with ocean. In fact, fun fact, I grew up in the only Minnesota county without a lake. And yet, the sound of the waves crashing into rocks and rolling back to sea is the soundtrack of my happiness.

This, what would be our final full day on retreat with in Sayulita, was one of my very favorites with the sun fully shining and the ocean crashing over my toes…I literally could not stop smiling.

Let’s go back! (Or should we go to Italy instead?)
