I don't like sharing large albums of similar photos but I am making an exception here in order to share more detail of these insects. Focus stacking wasn't possible due to the movement so there is a very shallow depth of field despite shooting f/8 to f/11 (that's just the nature of macro photography). The Yellow and black bumblebee was enormous, and the mantis was unexpected in the region. We found them in Montana (Flathead Lake area). Enjoy!

Everyone seemed to enjoy the last eclipse combo-photo so I put together one last compilation showing the phases during the eclipse (yes, I was there from the beginning to the end). This will be the last of my eclipse posts until the next eclipse... I hope you all are more patient than I find myself right now.

Start at the top right and move down and left through the middle for the phase progression, which covered more than two hours in total.

Cheers, and thank you for all the kind words and support!

So that total solar eclipse everybody was talking about? I drove to Baker City, OR to reach the path of totality and it was spectacular. The sky went dark like midnight with stars suddenly emerging as if I had just come to a stop after hyperspace travel. The temperature dropped rapidly and there was a palpable stillness that accompanied the phenomenon. There is absolutely no way I miss the next one in 2024 down south.

For those of you saying this was lame etc., you probably were in an area outside of totality. Even 95% totality didn't get the midnight effect, and, to deliberately drop a shameless pun, it's literally a night and day difference.

Here's a quick combination edit of five shots I took during totality. I hope to do some more edits etc. Cheers!

Northern Lights! Taken very very very early in the morning on 5/28/2017. I wouldn't have had the opportunity to witness them had my wife not insisted we go aurora hunting after her phone alerted her to a magnetic storm. Thanks Amber Worrell!

Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (just outside Cheney, WA) is bright green with a welcome garnishing of avian abundance!

Enjoy this small album of a yellow-headed blackbird and my favorite, a great blue heron.

Cheers!

I'm working my way through all the photos I took during the zoo trip.. should have one more album after this with Cheetahs and Hyenas as a showcase... For now, enjoy the random sampling of more beasties!

This album is small, and solely devoted to one of the most magnificent creatures on this earth: the white rhinoceros. Once found on the brink of total extinction, conservation efforts resulted in a huge success and their numbers have been steadily on the rise. That said, there is a recent epidemic of poaching for their horns (ridiculous aphrodisiac claims) resulting in another push in the wrong direction. Seeing a white rhino in person at this zoo was probably the highlight of the trip, just edging out feeding giraffes.

All of these photos came from the Wildlife World Zoo (Litchfield Park, AZ)-- highly recommend it! Do to zoo rules I can't use any of the photos taken commercially, but I hope you all enjoy! I will upload a second batch of these including a white rhino, cheetahs, owls, and more in the coming days. Cheers!
