Alligator’s Eye
Lakeland, FL • May 13, 2025

Alligators have been a definite favorite to get shots of when visiting Florida. I had been wanting to get a clear shot of one’s eye from a profile view on past trips but never had a telephoto lens with me to get close enough. And on a trip last August, I only saw one alligator that happened to be missing an eye on the side that was facing me lol.

This past May I finally got one. With May being right in the middle of Alligator mating season, they were very active at my go to park and there were ample opportunities to get a photo.

Here’s that shot I had been hoping to get. A big thanks to the alligator that swam by just close enough that I could get the shot with my telephoto lens.

Went out to Murfree Springs yesterday hoping that the incoming storms hadn't scared off all the wildlife that usually hangs out there. Thankfully it turned out to be a very active day.

I was most excited to see all of the adult Yellow-crowned Night Herons hunting for fish. When I first got my telephoto lens in August, I saw a juvenile Yellow-crowned (pic 2). I hadn’t seen any there since then, so it was so cool to see the adults with their definitive plumage this time.

Going into my most recent trip down to Florida I really wanted to try getting a close up of an alligator’s eye with the 150-600mm.

I found it funny that the only alligator I saw that week was missing an eye on the side it showed me.

Also, if you zoom in you can see a leach right under where the eye should be.
