As the seasons change, the bears are becoming more active, and I want to remind Lake City to Be Bear Aware!

It is our responsibility as people living or visiting mountain towns and wild areas to ensure that our food is secured and our actions don’t cause harm to the wildlife that call this valley home too.

Otherwise, they get habituated, and we’ll have a repeat of the horrific events of last year, and the year before. Ten bears killed, six of them months-old cubs. We, as a community, need to address this issue before the all too predictable happens again this year. Especially, with the fire, drought and dry conditions in the mountains this year, bears will roam further and be more desperate in search of food in the coming weeks. We need to be especially proactive as a community. Unfortunately, another mom with triplets has been seen in the same spots the last two families were killed in.

Keep garbage secured. Remove bird feeders, lock your cars. Also ensure you secure doors and windows in your home. It is absolutely necessary to follow these very instructions. Set an alarm to help make sure you’ve locked your car/home before sleep. Never leave food, trash, or really anything that smells unattended outside. Don’t film as they break into something, try and scare them off, or call someone who will. Your photo, my photo, absolutely no photo or sighting is worth it if it harms the animal in any way. A bear in town is in harm’s way, especially if it finds reasons to stay like they have been. Let’s keep them happy, wild and high up in the mountains!
