A huddle of walrus getting their beauty rest.

We made landfall around 10pm and spent some time observing the group and they spent time observing us. The odor smells a bit like elephants (the walrus, not us), but they were fascinating to witness in their environment, otherwise, with all their noises, orneriness, and laziness.

A couple of notes:

•in the water - graceful
•on land - not graceful

Both males and females have horns but the bulls have an armor-plated forehead. During rut, they take head-on impacts around 30mph when fighting. That speed can almost be doubled for two bulls running toward each other. It would be like impacting a wall at nearly 60mph.

Here in this photo, you can see that this bull has been shedding his winter coat. Amazing wildlife.
