“Personal stories humanize these issues, but it all begins with those faces,” she insists. “Everything I do is solution based. This isn’t just about conversation. It’s about action.”

Lauryn Renford’s adolescence was molded by loss. In the fall of 2017, her boyfriend was killed in an armed robbery, gunned down a mere 300 feet from his front door. A keen athlete, Zaire Kelly had won various accolades in track meets across the country. He could run a mile in 4.2 minutes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just before his fateful encounter, the 16-year-old had been walking home from College Bound – a preliminary after-school program for prospective university hopefuls. He’d planned on pursuing a career in forensic science. It would never happen.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2020, gun violence became the leading cause of mortality for Americans aged 1-19.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overshadowing cancer, car accidents, and drug overdoses, the United States endured a cascade of firearm-related fatalities, surging 29% from the previous year. Since 1981, more than 170,000 youths between the ages of five and 24 have fallen victim to this epidemic – a truly sobering statistic.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“A lot of us began to rally against the normalization. We didn’t have to accept this as ordinary. Looking back, I know that I had a voice, but sometimes you need a catalyst to be loud and proud about it.”

"They believe since we are just kids, that we ARE just kids... that our mind doesn't expand further than what we think, our thoughts and sayings are all words with no meaning, no action...

but I believe we don't have that real action because we are not getting the support we need from the adults."

We always hear that overcoming challenges make us stronger. I keep reminding myself this as things shift and pivot for this upcoming episode for .
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I had to fight hard to get this next episode in front of ya'll and it makes me think of the harder fight these young ladies face everyday.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
From politics to location releases, a lot had to be altered, cut, and blurred to be put in front of the public.

What wasn't hidden in order to avoid being sued, were the inspirational words and perspectives that Destini & Lauryn have, two ladies who did and are attending Thurgood Marshall High School in Anacostia, Washington, D.C.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These ladies, and I'm sure many of us here, have experienced loss in ways that lead us to more questions, most of which may never be answered.

But despite the obstacles, their passion and motivation is unwavering and I can't wait for you to hear more about their stories this week and experience the power behind their voices.

every road we travel
empties into alleys.
empties into trails.
empties into fields.
empties into valleys.

and, like light, we spill
from one home to the next.

not because
we want to leave
but because all we have
ever wanted is to find somewhere
worth staying.

Passion doesn’t fall short of any of the kiddos of this series, but you can really feel it with as he takes us on his melodic journey in Nashville. From violins to guitars, I was always taken aback by both his talent and his outlook on life.

Excited to share with you his episode later tonight at 7 PM EST.

We planned two weeks in Florida and 12 of those days were rained out for us. The pressure was on trying to capitalize on the two days we had without rain and the two short flights to make everything possible for episode 🥵

My first time being flown in a fixed wing plane was by a 20-year-old.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I remember walking up to the plane and telling myself, "Okay, no preconceived notions. You can't create this documentary and doubt these kid's abilities because of their age."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Addison was more than qualified to take me up in the sky and I was nervous and thrilled to prove that. Listening to her sling coordinates and number combinations over the headphones became a soothing lullaby. The warmth in her voice was sweet like molasses and her confidence was overwhelmingly inspiring.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The size, turbulence, and short flight made filming a challenge. The bumpiness was something I wasn't prepared for and the limited space made movement minimal. What I feel made this episode shine though was Addison's words. This focus on being comfortable with failure but also highlighting that it takes tenacity and hard work to get where we want to be.
