Hello Friends! Let me tell you a little story…

17 years ago I accidentally clicked on a baby photo online, and was completely enthralled with the MOST tender-hearted and beautiful baby photos I had ever seen.

I’ll never forget that moment. Because it was truly a moment that changed everything.

I was so overcome with emotion that my eyes filled with tears and I knew deep in my soul that I wanted to be able to capture images just like those.

I’ve loved babies my entire life and I desperately dreamed that I could one day create art of babies just like that. 🥹

I had been given a “nice” camera as a gift, so I set out taking photos of friends’ babies. These photos weren’t nearly as good as my photos are now (😅) but so many people supported me and lifted me up. It was incredible. And I’m sincerely forever grateful for each and every one of these amazing people!

Around this time, I found other photographers whom I also admired. And I studied their work obsessively to figure out what type of equipment and settings they used, where the light was coming from, etc.

Back then, there were no classes on how to do newborn photography. We were all figuring it out as we went.

It’s hard to believe that 17 years later, the first babies that I photographed are now driving & going to prom! 🚗💨

Over the years, owning my own business has been a rollercoaster of emotions. I genuinely put my heart and soul into every session, which is what continues to drive me to this day. After each session I’m filled with joy because I truly see the magic in each and every child. I truly do.🥹

But the journey has also been fraught with terror (during Covid) and continues to be a learning experience as I navigate new technology and a changing photography industry.

Through it all, I have been so very lucky to have extraordinary clients who have championed me to their friends, and kept my small business chugging along 💞

This is why I’m offering a special thank you to you as Baby Bean Portraits turns officially 17 years old this month! 🎉 What a journey it has been!

There is a trend in photography right now where photographers are offering clients images of blurry photos.

Now I’m the last person to put down art. And if it’s an artistic photo with emotional merit, I’m all for it!

But I often giggle to myself when I imagine presenting a gallery of newborn or baby photos to clients with their babies out of focus. 🙈

Trends are fun. But after almost two decades in the photography industry, I know what will matter most to people in the future: timeless, emotive portraits that capture the essence of their baby’s personality.

Just look at this sweet little cowpoke celebrating his first birthday! 🤠

He couldn’t be any more darling with his auburn hair, big blue eyes and ALL of his one year old personality shining through each of his portraits! ✨

How do I get newborns to smile?

Anyone who knows newborns, knows that their sleepy dreamy smiles can be super fleeting and hard to capture!

But as a life-long baby-whisperer and newborn photographer of 17 years, I have my session flow down to a science. This allows me to make babies super settled, comfy, and best of all, happy!

Once babies are settled, they go into a stage of sleep where they give a wide range of expressions: raising their eyebrows, frowning, pursing their lips, and then smiling!

And as part of my session flow, I'm ready when they do.

When you're hiring a baby photographer, you are not only hiring a person with a nice camera, but in a way you are hiring a "baby sociologist" who "reads" your baby in order to get the most stellar portraits possible.

Baby Marin was especially smiley for her Newborn Session. She was a bit of a unicorn when she opened her eyes and smiled right at me. It's my favorite photo from her session. Magical!
