This swallowtail was hanging out on some red valerian in my garden yesterday when I walked outside to leave. Naturally, I delayed my errands for a few minutes while I attempted to photograph it. Butterflies and dragonflies are much more difficult for me to photograph than birds because their flight is unpredictable and erratic.

Last week was the annual Swinomish Blessing of the Fleet as they gathered to feast and to pray for the fishermen who do the hard work of harvesting from the sea. The Boys and Girls Club was packed. I did not go out on a boat this year, but I did photograph the ceremony. Here are a few images from that day. Feel free to share.

I don’t photograph sports often and I have never photographed a track meet, but I have a deep admiration for athletes. This past weekend I was on assignment for at the western bi-district meet in Coupeville. La Conner has two pairs of sisters who are outstanding athletes - Kiana & Faith Jenkins and Nora & Maeve McCormick aka McJenkins. Grace & strength and beauty in action.

Swinomish brought awareness today in dramatic fashion to Missing, Murdered Indigenous women and people by hanging red dresses at strategically visible areas on the reservation. The day, which has become known in Canada as red dress day, is intended to raise awareness of the many women who have gone missing from reservations across the country. Swinomish will hold a meal and march later today.
